Stolen Gonal-F Multi-Dose Still Surfacing in U.S.

Mar 29th 2019 at 1:47 AM

In May of 2018 the FDA alerted health care industry professionals to a large scale theft of the popular fertility drug, Gonal-F as it was enroute from Italy to the U.S. More than 16,000 packages of Gonal-F Redi-ject and Gonal-F Multi-Dose were taken. This has continued to cause concern, even as late as March 2019 as the stolen lot numbers continue to surface throughout the U.S. Consumers are warned to refrain from purchasing these products from nonregistered companies or individuals posing as former IVF patients with extra medications for sale. The danger lies in the fact that this medication must be kept temperature controlled and the thieves could potentially have compromised the integrity of the drugs. Consumers should look at the provided lot numbers and report them immediately.

Gonal-F and Fertility Treatments

Gonal-F is an injectable medication to treat infertility in both men and women. It is commonly prescribed for women whose ovaries are not producing enough viable eggs. The IVF drug stimulates a woman’s follicles into producing eggs which can be fertilized. In men, the drug is used to increase sperm count. Most who take this medication are also taking it as a precursor to IVF treatments, growing their eggs so they can be harvested, fertilized and then implanted. Purchasing black-market infertility drugs poses a significant health risk and consumers in the U.S. are urged to exercise due diligence when making purchases.

Check Your Gonal-F Lot Number

The following lot numbers are printed on the infertility medication box. If your lot number matches the numbers below, immediately call the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Office of Criminal Investigations at 1-800-551-3989. All boxes shipped to pharmacies, or those sold through licensed, reputable online invitro medication companies, are packaged and shipped to consumers in tamper evident cartons.

• BA049137 (Expiration date: 5/2019)

• BA049037 (Expiration date: 9/2019)

• BA049143 (Expiration date: 2/2020)

• BA049040 (Expiration date: 9/2019)

Consumers wanting to verify the authenticity of the lot number printed on the box, can access a free Gonal-F app, called Check My Meds, to scan the barcode. Each year hundreds of women, desperate to start families, purchase questionable IVF drugs enticed by the extremely low pricing. Consumers are urged to research the company offering the drugs to make certain they are licensed to sell infertility medications online, and through pharmacies. Couples looking for affordable infertility medications do have options. The USDA and the FDA urge consumers to speak directly with insurance companies, manufacturers and look for reputable online IVF pharmacies for the best savings, and avoid purchasing “used” or “leftover” medications offered online.
