“Skooshny...specialised in quirky, intelligent power pop with razor-sharp lyrics, complex song structures and big fat rounded guitars. ...[Mark] Breyer has teamed up with several long-time collaborators to bring us Son of Skooshny.... The following has been written over the years about what SKOOSHNY was:
“Contrary to popular rock’n’roll belief, flash isn't everything. Case in point: It's quite conceivable that no band in rock’s hoary history was less flashy, more self-effacing than SKOOSHNY. The name itself, widely disliked even by the band’s strongest supporters, is Russian for ‘boring.’
“This modest band, with its equally modest official recorded output, consistently produced music of rare quality: spectral harmonies, labyrinthine song structures, and playful, literate lyrics that transcended the low-budget productions to which they were constrained to resort.

Alamantra
Alamantra

Webpage: http://alamantra.org Location: Birmingham, Al, United States Description: A seasoned, eclectic mix of classic and traditional rock, blues rock, psychedelic, and jam band influences Biography: Let's begin with three things Alamantra is NOT: Alamantra is not for everybody. In the world of marketing this would appear to be a counter-intuitive statement; but marketing isn’t based on truth or integrity. However, music is …or should be… a wholesome, honest experience. Music is intimate and when a listener partakes of an artist’s work, a relationship is created.
Like any other band, Alamantra wants to find a market for their music. Still, their songs were never written just to make a buck. Otherwise, you would have probably heard of Alamantra a long time ago.
Alamantra does not fit neatly into a pigeon hole. The closest would probably be “American Traditional Rock” …but only if you’re willing to accept that rock traditionally has a jaded, jagged side. It isn’t perfect, and it isn’t supposed to be. Alamantra pays homage to a broad range of sounds: classic & psychedelic rock, blues, groove, folk-rock and so on. There is a shameless sense of nostalgia in Alamantra’s work and they don’t play any music that doesn’t inspire them.
Alamantra is not a “new” band. They are dedicated, seasoned musicians who are comfortable with their musical chemistry. They’ve been doing this awhile.
Alamantra began in Birmingham, Alabama in 2000. Rather, that was the year the music stopped changing its brand name every few years. Songwriter/Guitarist/Vocalist, Bobby Shiflett, had begun using the name, Alamantra, as early as 1995, for an online persona. The general meaning is derived from Ala (Latin for “wing” ) + mantra or “prayer.” “Alamantra” is a play on the phrase “a wing and a prayer;” which is certainly an apt description of how they've managed to stick around. Though some pronounce the name, Ala –mon- tra, the band pronounces it, Ala –man- tra.
The Members:
Bobby Shiflett: Guitar, Vocals: Bobby is the primary songwriter and lyricist for Alamantra. He has been writing and playing for a generation. First inspired by The Beatles, Bobby has been on a musical odyssey of immense proportions. This is reflected in his broad musical interests. Both his lyrics and music have an introspective, undeniably spiritual element to them.
Steve Casteel: Guitar.
Steve comes from a musical family and grew up in the Florence/Muscle Shoals area. While growing up, he spent time in the studios around the area and sharpened his chops in touring bands like Radio Tokyo. He has hung out, roomed and played with people like Rob Malone (Fiddleworms, Drive-by Truckers). Steve is an intuitive, fluid guitarist, who is easy to play with. We’ve been jamming together in one thing or another since the mid 1990s. Alamantra’s secret ingredient is in the nearly seamless weaving of the guitars and Steve makes this possible.
Brandon Allison: Drums.
Alamantra’s original drummer was Bobby's brother, Ken Shiflett. He had played with the band since its official debut in 2000, and well beyond that, in other projects going back to 1993. In 2009 he scaled back his participation, though he occasionally sits in on percussion.
The drums are the heartbeat of any band, and it took a while for Alamantra to find a new heart for its ancient spirit. In Brandon Allison we found just that. At 32, Brandon is the youngest member of the band. Brandon, with his easy going demeanor and pocket drumming, has beat new life into the band.
Rick Glaze: Bass, Vocals.
Andrew ‘Drew’ Reid had played bass for Alamantra (and earlier projects) since 1993. When he left in 2009, it created a space in Alamantra that proved challenging to fill. Alamantra went through over a dozen talented musicians in the attempt. Finally they found Rick Glaze. Rick is a gifted, versatile, experienced bass player and a strong vocalist. Though he is laid back and possessed with an indispensable sense of humor, he has stepped into the work with purpose, made it his own, been a real team player and taken on a lot of the vocals…for which the rest of us are grateful.
Epilogue
Though the term “indie” has been reduced to being a misnomer, Alamantra truly is an indie band. From the beginning, it has been built on a DIY ethic. In 2003, Alamantra helped to organize and present a series of shows in the Birmingham area to raise money and awareness for RAINN. (Rape, Abuse, Incest, National Network).
In addition to Workingman’s Bread, Alamantra has released three other cds: Nu 2 U in 2000 (out of print), Alamantra: 2004 (out of print), and By Turns in 2009 (out of print, scheduled to be reissued in Fall of 2012). Alamantra’s instrumental surf rock song, Surf Babe (By Turns) has been featured more than once on German National Television …Wir warten immer noch auf die Lizenzgebühren, meine guten Freunde.Press Release:

John Trager
John Trager

Webpage: htp://www.johntrager.com Location: Melbourne, Victoria, Australia Description: Inspired by the song writing of John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Daniel Johns and Darren Hayes, Melbourne singer-songwriter, John Trager describes his sound as "Dolly Grunge", an explosion between rock attitude and pop melodies. Biography: What do Australia’s favourite Dwarf, a six foot inflatable earth ball, and 28 Days guitarist Simon Hepburn have in common? They all star in Melbourne singer-songwriter, John Trager’s quirky music video “I Don’t Wanna Wake Up!” For indie solo artist John Trager, growing up on a small farm in rural Victoria with parents 27 years apart in age, provided him with a unique perspective on the world, highlighted in his sometimes confronting, but honest lyrical style. He first discovered his passion for performing at the age of 10, when he started singing in country music talent quests. By his teens, inspired by the song writing of John Lennon, Kurt Cobain and Daniel Johns and Darren Hayes, Trager joined his first rock band, Tantrum. During the next ten years, Trager fronted several Victorian bands with minor success. His desire for a life in music was fuelled by experiences of performing in front of 10,000 at Rod Laver Arena as Rock Eisteddfod Battle of the Bands State Runner-Up; touring regional Victoria as receipt of a $20,000 Arts Victoria touring grant; and appearing on ABC’s Fly TV playing to 5,000 at Moonee Valley Race Course as Push On Battle of the Bands finalist. After overcoming severe depression in 2007, Trager quit his 9 to 5 job, sold his house in the country, packed his life into a suitcase and headed for the city to chase his dreams. He quickly found work as an MC in strip clubs along King Street in Melbourne, but the environment created more darkness in his life as documented in the song “My Addiction To You”. After several shifts he finally found peace in St Kilda, moving in next door to one of his teen rock idols, Simon Hepburn “Hep” from 28 Days. Many beers and jam sessions later, Trager buildt up the courage and played Hep his solo material. Impressed by what he heard, he encouraged the young song writer to record an EP and supported the project by appearing in the video for his debut solo single “I Don’t Wanna Wake Up!” Recorded by talented Melbourne engineer and producer, Michael Zammit at Airwaves Recording Studio, and mastered by David Briggs (Little River Band) at The Production Workshop, John Trager’s 6 track EP “Pop Songs & Panic Attacks!” will be released on ITunes in May 2012. Featuring the infectious break up anthem “I Don’t Wanna Wake Up!”, dark rock duet “Emergency Lover”, and the deeply personal piano ballad “War” (about men’s mental health). Trager leaves no stone unturned as he documents his experiences lyrically, and explores the topic that puzzles him most… life! For more information check out www.johntrager.com Press Release:
Award-winning singer-songwriter, John Trager, is promising big things for the music world, with the recent worldwide release of his debut solo single “I Don’t Wanna Wake Up!” This is the first single from Trager’s forthcoming debut EP, “Pop Songs & Panic Attacks!”, scheduled for release in May 2012. Mastered by David Briggs, guitarist for Australia’s own rock legends Little River Band, and inspired by the song writing of John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Daniel Johns and Darren Hayes, “I Don’t Wanna Wake Up!” has been described as “Dolly Grunge”, an explosion of rock attitude and pop melodies. The video clip, which has already received over 1500 You Tube hits since the single’s 20th January iTunes release, features Jeremy Hallam, dubbed "The People Dwarf" by comedy duo Hamish and Andy, and Simon Hepburn, better known as “Hep” from Australian punk rock band 28 Days. Australian-born Trager has been passionate about music for over 15 years, drawing upon personal experience to create his masterpieces. “I Don’t Wanna Wake Up!” is a two and half minute break-up anthem that was written immediately following Trager’s escape from a hurtful relationship. The accompanying music video, filmed in Melbourne, Australia, is symbolic of the struggling love theme, with Trager having felt like he was “carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders”. Yet Trager’s positive attitude and determination is reflected in the style of song, which delivers a lively, loud and upbeat guitar-driven melody rather than dark and depressive monotones. This is a song that, like many of his others, will undoubtedly have people singing, or shouting, along in their cars. With hopes of success for his debut single, Trager is already planning his next release. "Emergency Lover” (the second single from his EP) saw Trager win the award for "Best Song Writing" at the 2011 National Music Video Mash Up Awards held in Brisbane. The song is again reflective of Trager’s personal experience, and features the incredible vocals of Safiye Vurdu, a voice that has been likened to American rock band Evanescence’s Amy Lee. Trager will be touring nationally in late 2012 to support the release of his forthcoming EP. As an exclusive offer, until 31st March 2012, fans that purchase “I Don’t Wanna Wake Up!” from iTunes can forward their receipt to contact@johntrager.com and receive three live acoustic album tracks recorded in November during Melbourne Music Week. S&M
S&M

Webpage: http://www.sm-band.com Location: Watertown, South Dakota, USA Description: A new alternative sound to country, real, honest and simple music by S&M Biography: S & M
Bio
Being true to the music, keeping it simple, honest and creative, that is what S&M delivers with their approach to country music. Don’t let the new album “What are we waiting for” by S&M take you by surprise when you give it a listen, it is just basic and raw emotion put in melodies. Like music evolving since the days of Adam and Eve, S&M continues to move forward with their love of musical creativity.
From the Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Travis Tritt, and on to Johnny Cash the great artists of the past and present are found pulsing in the beats of S&M music.
S&M has held its original members together as a group for seventeen years, playing to clubs, festivals, and casinos. As one of the members stated “We have played together so long we are extensions of each other”, they all definitely agree on one thing… they play music with respect to honor those that have dedicated their heart and soul to entertaining others.
Jeff Geiser sits upon the drum riser keeping steady beats for the last 35 years. For 34 years Mike Chlopkowiak has been putting on the groove playing up and down the bass. Lindie Woodring has been performing lead/harmony vocals along with her percussions for over 30 years Ed Woodruff is the lead songwriter/guitarist and vocalist that has been using up recording tapes for over 35 years. Add all this experience and love for music together and what do you get??? The new alternative country sound of S&M. Wonder where the name S&M came from?
That’s better left to the imagination ;-)

Music Emsissions review of S&M’s CD “What are we waiting for” on 2012-01-13 Michael_Morrison Said:
Most would agree most popular artists out there have something truly special to give to their fans. This goes above the typical attributes like raw talent, amazing songs, nice voice, or even a very marketable look, sound and image. There's something truly infectious at the core of these artists that simply makes us feel good when we listen to them. Whatever "it" is - they all seem to have "it".
Today I listened to the latest CD from South Dakota's own S&M (What are We Waiting For - 2011). Venturing to the internet and reading the bio I get the impression these guys are extremely passionate and experienced about the songwriting craft. From start to finish this CD from S&M is a very pleasurable and entertaining statement. It has a very up-front and personal Southern Rock approach to it and even dabbles in Rhythm and Blues. Any fans of any of these musical styles will enjoy this latest release from Ed Woodruff and company and is clearly marketed for those who like a male singer a mystique of say a John Cougar, Allman Brothers, Lynard Skynard and even Ray Charles. I get the impression Woodruff and company are just rolling with what they know as a band within all these songs. In other words they hit the mark remarkably well just being who they are. Favorite tracks include the title track, (I'm Stoned), (All Alone), (The Road to Heaven). All songs possess an amazing feel. The songwriting digs a bit deeper than the next artist. The band is spot on and just makes the whole CD more enjoyable. Kudos goes out to the fancy fretwork and amazing vocals from Ed Woodruff. Trust me when I say he is a marquee talent within this project. If he wrote all these songs he could be bigger than any us realize right now. The overall vibe of the production is very passionate and soulful in nature.
I see S&M as an unnoticed diamond in the rough. What do they got that Greg Allman don't got - Nothing. Every song is amazing, the musicianship is spot on and Ed Woodruff delivers the goods. I can't hear any noticeable weaknesses worth mentioning in fact this is one of the best CD Ive heard in a long while. I am eager to hear what his next release will sound like. In close most famous artists out there have "it" I'm not so sure what it but S&M Featuring Ed Woodruff has whatever "it" is.

Album: What Are We Waiting For
Reviewed by Matthew Warnock
It is a rare feat for a band these days to release a second, or if by some miracle, a third album, stick together and continue to be successful. It seems that even the most successful groups have a hard time sticking together for more than one album before they fade back into the shadows as the latest flavor of the week takes their place on the charts and in the public consciousness. With that in mind, it is even more impressive that modern country band S&M have not only been able to make music for 17 years, but that they have kept original members on board the entire time. This cohesiveness that has developed over the years, as both songwriters and performers, shines through on their latest record What Are We Waiting For?” The album is a collection of classic country sounds, interpreted in a modern fashion, all being played with the type of musical understanding and artistic passion that can only be developed by spending years on the bandstand together.
The tracks on the album run the gamut from slow, country ballads, to southern rock influenced songs, all of which are written with the utmost respect for the tradition of the genre, as well as injecting enough personality to make them unique and worth the price of admission. Songs such as the opener “The Road to Heaven” is a mixture of acoustic guitar accompaniment leading into a killer electric lick that raises the intensity and takes the track to the next level. While other songs, like “I’m Stoned,” stays on the softer, acoustic side of the genre while still maintaining a high energy level and deep audience engagement. No matter what approach, groove, tempo or overall musical vibe the band chooses, one thing remains the same, their tight-knit ensemble interaction, toe-tappin’ groove and ability to find the right instrumental backing to frame the lyrical content of any track. All of these elements come together to help make the album as successful as it is.
One of the musical elements that stand out during the record is the lead guitar work by Ed Woodruff and Al Mevissen. Ed and Al’s solo work, in both a lead and featured solo context, portrays the time they have spent on the bandstand and with a guitar in their hands. The intro to “I’ll be there” is a good example of the approach to the lead lines. The riff is a melodic phrase that repeats itself before finishing on a cadence, leading into the opening verse. By keeping things simple, Woodruff and Mevissen allow the listeners to be a part of their creative output, rather than playing over their heads or running lead lines that sound impressive but that don’t fit the musical moment.
As well, the alternating vocals of Woodruff and Lindie Woodring are a nice touch that adds an extra level of interest to the record. Woodring, who is only featured on the track “I’m Stoned,” brings a softer touch to the song with her range and vocal timbre, adding a touch of variety to the rest of the album which is sung by Woodruff. Her powerful vocal quality never overpowers the song, but instead it blends nicely with the rest of the band as she digs deep and gives a strong performance on both the verse and chorus parts of the track.
Overall, What Are We Waiting For is a strong effort from a band that has been around for a long time, learned their lessons well on the road and in the recording studio, and have brought those experiences together on an interesting and enjoyable modern country record.

CD REVIEW:
South Dakota’s own A&M releases their latest CD entitled What are you Waiting For in 2011. Band members include Jeff Geiser (Drums), Mike Chlopkowaik, All Mevissen (Bass), Al Mevissen, Ed Woodruff (Guitar), Al Mevissen (Mandolin), Ed Woodruff, Lindie Woodring (Lead Vocals), Al Mevissen, Carmen Mevissen (Harmony Vocals)
The CD kicks things off with “The Road to Heaven” a peaceful intro piece that serves up acoustic rock groove against driving rock rhythm, meshed with an infectious bluesy-rock melody that flows and ebbs its way through to emotional fruition. I especially like how this piece builds up well towards a grand slam of a chorus. Track 2 “All Alone” dishes out yet another solid track with its passionate, heartfelt vocal delivery by Woodruff, solid bluesy rock groove and impressive lyrical content. Track 3 “I’m Stoned” features Lindie Woodring on vocals and goes down smooth - like a shot of whiskey with its well-placed harmonies, heartfelt vocals and impressive mandolin licks. The CD makes a solid first impression dishing out 3 rock solid songs in a row. As the CD unfolds I can hear many musical influences reminiscent of classic Bob Segar, Black Crows, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, R.E.M. Gordon Lightfoot and even Pearl Jam. Right from the start you will notice Woodruff and company feel quite comfortable just letting it all hang out musically, not holding anything back. The overall musical vibe has a Southern Fried Rock feel to it with a touch of Americana-Rock-Blues. The bands playing is rock solid across the board as they dish out some impressive bluesy guitar licks against a rock steady rhythm section. Equally as impressive is Woodruffs vocal presence and harmonies as he takes several vocal risks throughout the CD indicating to me a strong and confident vocal ability. Woodruffs voice is full of passion and recklessness abandon. Woodruff clearly makes the (singer to listener) vocal connection with his singing. The songs themselves are short and sweet musical experiences, each one possessing unique personality, flair and signature groove in classic Jam Band fashion. From passionate “Dark Before the Dawn” to my personal favorite “What are we Waiting For” to heartfelt “I’ll be There” and “Everything” to upbeat I Aint Jesse James” this CD has something for just about everyone. The CD ends with Bittersweet Honesty” the perfect finale statement. The overall mix lacks what I would call continuity song to song and doesn’t compare to other world class productions within this genera. Drums (especially share sound extremely thin on a few songs and lack solid low end punch and crystal clear high end clarity. Mixing will always be the biggest make or break for any production. Each phase of the production process (recording, mixing, mastering) should be handled by a seperate and experienced professional – especially the mix. I will add that because the songs are so amazing this issue is virtually transparent to most listeners. Track 1 and 2 sound a bit awkward fading out the way they do and sound like incomplete statements. In my opinion the bands name and cover art concept don't coincide with their amazing sound and image.
What are we Waiting For by S&M is a solid debut statement. Song for song, note for note it has an amazing feel good groove to it. It’s strong suit – the song for song rock solid consistency and amazing vocal presence of lead singer Ed Woodruff. At the end of the day this CD possess allot of powerful emotions and touches on some amazing subject matter. If S&M has a slam dunk live presentation then that would make a pretty lethal combination. So if you like rock that dishes out rock-bluesy type ditties reminiscent of classic Allman Brothers, Pearl Jam and Gordon Lightfoot then you should jump into this CD head first.

Rob Owen

Webpage: http://www.robowenmusic.com Location: San Francisco, CA, US Description: If Coldplay wrote a song with Peter Gabriel and John Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls) it would sound like "Another Breath." Biography: A Collision of Inspiration and Influence Rob Owen Artist Biography
“Rob Owen’s songs are uplifting, almost poppy, and are filled with gems of lyrical insight….” –San Francisco Voice
Singer/songwriter Rob Owen was born amidst the digital boom of the Silicon Valley. As a teenager, Rob left behind the binary noise and fast-paced bustle of “The Valley.” He discovered an analog alternative within a creative lifestyle in Santa Cruz, California - where he still lives today.
“I found the area around Santa Cruz to be way more conducive to songwriting,” Rob explains. “It was the sound of the ocean … it was the accumulation of countless blissful days simply staring at the crashing waves that led me to a different dimension in my writing" It was in this new environment that Owen's musical life would evolve from a creative collision of inspiration and influence.
By the age of seventeen Rob began writing and performing around the Bay Area. Since then, he has played many different venues throughout California, including a 2009 Northwest coast tour. When not working as a musician, he enjoys spending quiet time at the beach with his wife, daughter and two boys. Rob works to live, instead of living to work – his music reflects this paradigm that saturates his being.
Rob’s earliest influences stem from listening to his grandfather sing while playing an old beat-up, out of tune, upright piano. Owen reflects, “When I reach deep down - during a performance - I feel as though I am singing with my grandfather’s soulful, raspy, baritone voice." Rob has always felt at one with his grandfather and his musical routes. Given Owen’s musical influences, he continues to create a soulful sound within the context of both his lyrics and his intricate musical arrangements and phrasing.
For Owen, the essence of creativity is about inspiration and influence. “I find that at the place where inspiration and influence collide, there is an infinite ocean of creativity,” he explains. A wide-range of artists, across many genres, was vital to Rob's development as a musician. Rob is not hesitant to point out the effect Ray Lamontagne, Peter Gabriel and Eddie Vedder has had on him as a singer and songwriter.
If you ask Rob where he gets his musical inspiration from – things become much more personal. His grandfather, the love of his family, and the joys of simply being alive are what stir his muses. Owen has been a witness to many personal tragedies over the years – but none that he did not end up transforming into fuel for his passion in music and life. “After experiencing a few brushes with my own mortality, I’ve come to appreciate the simple things in life, sometimes they can be the most profound.” Rob’s lyrics dance between experience and reflection but always grounded in love, sorrow, transformation, and joy.
Over the past fifteen years Rob has been able to take his influences and inspirations and synthesize them into musical arrangements. This has led him to be recognized by national magazines, newspapers, independent record labels, as well as radio and television. Rob’s recent accomplishments include having his compositions aired on MTV’s Real World, a number one song critique in the June 2010 issue of Music Connection Magazine. A few months later, Rob followed that critique up with the top Music Critique of 2010 within the year-end issue of Music Connection Magazine.
Owen has also been nominated as "Best Adult Alternative Artist" by the ISSA, as well as a “Top Five Vocalist” in the Songwriter of the Month competition on SingerUniverse.com. Owen's music has appeared on Yamaha’s Cubase DVD and earned exceptional reviews in The Santa Cruz Sentinel and The San Francisco Voice.
In 2010, Rob released a five song EP entitled, Common Ground. While the title track is reminiscent of revolutionary music from the nineteen-sixties stylistically - it is also truly contemporary and powerfully relevant. Along with the single “Clear Day in July” Common Ground has helped the music industry take note of Owen’s wide market appeal and talent as both a singer and songwriter.
“I find it invigorating to express the kind of energy and emotion I feel during any performance,” Rob explains. Over time, there is always a feeling that an artist would write one song that they love to perform repeatedly. For Rob, this composition would certainly be “Common Ground.” He elaborates, “I’m happy the way that it turned out, I like the energy and dynamics of the tune. The song is about interconnection or “inter-being.” It is about the common ground we all stand on but often forget about.”
Rob has a new single slated to be released in early 2012 entitled, “Another Breath." Of the new release Owen says, “This is the closest and most meaningful song to my heart." He describes the song as an intimate examination of the time he spends away from his love - his wife - and how he suffers until the time he can get back home to her. Owen’s music is passionate, sincere, real and honest. These traits all resound within his lyrics, and melodies.
Even though there really isn’t much geographical distance between the cold binary world of Silicon Valley and the warm and peaceful analog world of Santa Cruz - to Rob, they are a billion light years away. Rob Owen’s creative collision of inspiration and influence has been his own Big Bang. His musical universe will surely continue to expand into 2012 and beyond.
