Get Your Resume in the Hands of the Right Person

When submitting your resume, the last place you want to start is with the HR Department.  HR staff members are administrators who are not nearly as pressed to fill the opening as the department head who is working overtime to keep up.  So, do the work necessary to get your resume in the hands of the ‘right’ person.

The "RIGHT PERSON" is the person within one of your targeted companies who would be either your boss or your boss’s boss!  If you are looking for a position as an industry Auditor, you’ll be looking for a person whose likely title would be Accounting Manager or Internal Audit Manager.  If you’re looking for a public accounting Auditor position, you will be looking for Audit Partner or Audit Manager.  Many times you can find contact names on the company website. Many executives also have extensive profiles on various Social Networks like LinkedIn. You will need to learn basic Google search techniques and to navigate the Internet to find the individuals you are targeting.

If you don’t have the name, you might try calling into the targeted company and asking for the "correct spelling" of their Accounting Manager’s name. When you ask for the correct spelling the receptionist (hopefully) assumes you already have the name and that you are just clarifying the spelling and she spells the name for you. You also want to confirm the contact's exact title. If the gatekeeper is being cooperative you might also ask for their direct line, so that you have this information for your follow up call.  You are planning on placing a follow up call after submitting your resume…right?

If you run across an uncooperative gatekeeper, try calling back over the lunch hour to try to catch the gatekeeper at lunch.  During her break, there is usually someone covering the front desk who isn’t happy about being there and whose regular job is not gatekeeper.  Sometimes they will give out the information you are asking for without any questions.  It is important to always be nice to the gatekeeper as they will be more receptive to your future calls and can end up helping you get to your interview.
