Learn to Save Money from These Types of People

Mar 12th 2019 at 7:11 PM

Saving money is something at one point or another many of us strive to do.  Sometimes it is out of necessity, and sometimes it is just out of desire.  Learning how to save money helps us achieve our future financial goals such as buying a house, taking a trip, or saving for retirement, and it also helps us live within our means and pay our day-to-day bills on time.

However, when it comes to learning how to save money or live frugally, there are some people who are better to learn from than others.  People who have been there, done that, or have results that prove they know what they are doing.

Because, here's the thing.  There's a lot of bad financial advice out there.  Also, just because someone claims to be an expert in finances doesn't necessarily mean that is true.  I have met financial advisors whose own finances were a mess.

So, how do we know who we should listen to when we are looking for tips on how to save money?  Well, here are a few people I think know what they are talking about.

Debt-free people. People who are living without debt, clearly it took them some hard work and wise choices to get to that point.  These are often people who are willing to sacrifice and do what it takes to experience financial freedom.  If you are looking for advice on how to save money, definitely ask those around you who are not carrying any debt.  They know what they are talking about.

People who lived through the Great Depression. If you have ever considered learning how to live frugally, talk to someone who was alive during the Great Depression.  The people who had experienced this very difficult time learned how to live frugally because their lives depended on it in many cases.  These are some of the toughest people I know and they are experts on how to make do with very little.

The Amish. Amish people live a very frugal and simple life and are very experienced when it comes to living within your means.  They don't use credit cards, and they don't spend excessively.  They work hard for their money, they make a lot of things from scratch, and they don't own more than they need.  The Amish are another group of people who know how to save money well.

People who have a savings fund. Generally, people who have created a savings fund have done so because they live within their means and they don't overspend.  They clearly have extra to put into a savings fund.  They also realize the important of a savings fund.  People who save money for an emergency are often wise with their money.

As I said earlier in this article, there are many people who offer poor financial advice.  To get further ahead in your finances you want to make sure you are listening to people who will help you reach your financial goals, and not to people who offer advice that will actually hinder you.

For example, you don't want to take financial advice to someone who is claiming bankruptcy, or someone who struggles day to day to make ends meet.  While their circumstances may not be entirely their own, they are not in a good place to offer you advice during their time of financial struggle.

Seek out wise people to learn from and watch how your finances improve.  Ask as many questions as you can, and observe the way they live their life while trying to apply some of the same practices to your own life.  You may discover that saving money becomes easier over time!
