Do you have a pet peeve?

Nov 11th 2010 at 5:30 AM

Do you have a pet peeve?  A pet peeve is your favorite minor complaint. It's when someone's actions really irritate you and you just can't stand it. It can be irrational and not annoy anyone else, but it drives you nuts.

Mine is when people assume that everything I do online comes easily to me and that they cannot do what I do.  What?  You must be kidding me!

Look, I am no knight and I do not wear shining armor.  I'm an ordinary man who works hard at what I do and anyone can do what I do IF they are willing to put forth some effort, but to assume that I am somehow special is beyond my understanding.  Really!

Traffic generation is simple, but not easy.  It doesn't require any formal education to learn, but it does require hard work on the top of more hard work and I think that is where people get it wrong the most often.

There are too many people who think that simply creating backlinks to their websites and blogs will bring them a tsunami of traffic.  Yes, backlinks are important, but the type of backlinks are MORE important.

There is an entire market for people selling backlinks to the people who misunderstand the difference between backlinks and QUALITY backlinks.  Rather than pay someone $9.99 for 1000 crappy backlinks that are worthless you would be much better off spending today creating one QUALITY backlink and tomorrow creating another QUALITY backlink and then the next day another etc..

A QUALITY backlink is one that comes from an authority site in your niche market.  How do you find authority sites to get backlinks?  That takes us back to the simple vs easy.  It is simple, all you need to do is build relationships with other people in your niche market.  It is not easy because it requires you to find other people in your niche market and build relationships with them.  That sounds the same, but it is quite different.

Here's why!  How often do you see someone actually take the time to build a relationship with other people on Facebook or Twitter?  Not very often, right?  I accept a friend request and 43 seconds later I either find a posting on my wall about their business opportunity or there is a message in my inbox.  That is not building a relationship, that is spamming and it doesn't work, period!

Use the search functions on both Facebook and Twitter using your own niche keywords.  Then look for people whose online behavior isn't spammy and reach out to them.  Never, never, never include a link to your business opportunity in your communication.  That is why both Facebook and Twitter have a place for a URL in your profile.

Can you see the difference between simple and easy?  It is simple, but it requires effort and for you to avoid cutting corners.  There are no shortcuts!

I absolutely agree about the back links. The same applies to referrals - one quality and active referral is worth 100 you purchase and who then go inactive. Great article.
