Nap Rooms – A Rising Trend in Offices

Technology may have made things easier for most jobs, but it also raises the demands at work. Because of this, a lot of employees feel the burnout earlier and end up leaving their jobs in just a year or two. To make employees stay longer, employers and HR personnel should seek ways of helping their employees deal with stress. A rising trend in this endeavor is installing a nap room in the office.

Why naps are important

Although the previous night’s sleep is the best way to recharge for the next day’s work performance, it is a fact that these days, getting a full seven to eight hours of sleep is impossible. Stress, off-hour work duties, plus balancing family life or social life in the mix makes the working force sleep less each day. Plus, exposure to the blue LED light from laptops, computer screens, cell phones, and tablets also keep you awake at night. When an employee is unable to get enough sleep, the employee will have a hard time concentrating due to tiredness and sleepiness, and this will reduce work productivity

Benefits of napping

Even short naps of 10 to 15 minutes are enough to give your employees a reboot and increase their alertness. A short nap can boost one’s learning, reaction time, memory, and communication and motor skills. Napping lessens the fatigue an employer feels which increases feelings of happiness and contentment and positive thinking. A well-rested employer means less sick days for your workforce as well.

How it works

Having a napping room does not mean everyone gets to take a nap at the same time – for example, one person per department or team can sneak a 15-minute nap during the day, three times a week. You should hire someone to take charge of the napping room to record the name of the employee and the employee’s department, and that person should also be in charge of waking up the person after 15 minutes. This way, everything is organized, no one abuses the napping room, and no one oversleeps.

Making a nap room

Make sure to provide a separate room that is used solely for sleeping – it can be an unused office space or even a storage room or large closet, depending on the size of our office. You still have to make sure that they meets the health guidelines of sleeping quarters and that the area is well-ventilated. Lighting is important as well. The room must be dim enough so that your employee will be able to sleep immediately instead of wasting time tossing and turning. The mattresses should be comfortable as well.

So if you want to be a company that cares for the welfare of its employees, a napping room will be a great incentive and hiring feature.
