THE WAY BACK HOME
The word ecology comes to us from the Greek---Eco means house and ology is the study of something---ecology is the study of our house. For me, this word has always had as much significance as words such as God or Buddha or Allah or
Christ. To practice the discipline of ecology is to seek to understand our place on the earth and to reconnect to her vital living energy. Deep ecology is founded on two basic principles: first is a scientific insight into the interrelatedness of all systems of life on Earth, and this is joined with the idea that anthropocentrism - human-centeredness - is a misguided way of
seeing things. Deep ecologists say that an eco-centric attitude is more consistent with the truth about the nature of life on Earth. Instead of regarding humans as something completely unique or chosen by God, they see us as integral threads in the fabric of life. They believe we need to develop a less dominating and aggressive posture towards the Earth if we and the planet are to
survive. The Gaia theory and the Systems Thinking approach as applied to environmental issues can both be understood as expressions of deep ecology.
