Surviving Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Without Surgery

Knight Duerig

I don't know if any of you have noticed or not, but there seems to be a push to make us more aware of nutrition and its effects on our everyday life. (It’s not as if we ever live on junk food, or anything). One aspect of life attached to a keyboard that can be impacted by nutrition is controlling Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Vitamin supplementation in the form of B vitamins, as well as minerals and fatty acids, is sometimes necessary.

When my Carpal Tunnel crippled me the fall of '93, my wife had a copy of Dr. Wright's Book of Nutritional Therapy, which was first published by Rodale Press in 1979. We decided to try his recommendations before I was forced into surgery.

If you have Carpal Tunnel, then you know how painful and debilitating it can be. If you are lucky enough to not have the 'Big T', keep this information in mind, just in case...

In Dr. Wright's book, the case study he cited had a lady using 200 mg of pyridoxine (B6) three times a day and a high-potency B complex at the same time. His patient reduced her dosage of the B6 to 100 mg after about three weeks, because she said that “all that B6 made me too sleepy.” A month later he had her add 250 mg of magnesium oxide twice a day along with one tablespoon, twice a day, of a mixture of pressed soy, safflower and sunflower oils, for the essential fatty acids. After another 2 months, he had her reduce the dosage to 50 mg of the B6 for maintenance. He also told her to eat more whole grain products and to use vegetable oils in her cooking.

Dr. Wright summed up his observations by stating “This case illustrates well only one of the myriad heath problems traceable to food processing and refining. Innumerable studies have shown that more than half of the B vitamins, as well as large proportions of trace minerals, are removed by refining whole grains into white flour. In this case, the lack of vitamin B6 almost lead to surgery.”

When I started treating myself, I took 200 mg of B6, three times a day, one B100 complex three times a day and 250 mg of Magnesium twice a day. It took several weeks before I noticed any change, but once the effect started, it was very obvious. It was probably close to 2 months before I could really tell the difference, and at about six months, I finally stopped wearing the wrist brace. I have since cut my dosage back to one or two 100 mg B6, one 250 mg cal-mag-zinc and one B100 a day.

I almost had to undergo surgery on both wrists back in1993, but thanks to this vitamin therapy, I have been pain free ever since.

If you do suffer from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, check with your Doctor to find out if there is any reason that you can’t take some large dosages of Vitamin B, and if he says that there isn’t, may you have as much luck as I had with treating my Carpal T with vitamins.
