List Building Is It Worth It?

Jul 12th 2010 at 8:24 AM

I got asked a question in my forum today about the return that list building has and the poster was curious as to whether or not it was worth it to list build.

Yes, but there are a few things you need to know before you get started...

First, you do NOT need a list of ten thousand people. We focus waaaaaay too much on the size of the list and less about the relationship with the list. We need to worry about the quality of the relationships we build, not the size of the list.

Second, to get people on your list, you need to give them a reason. This means you have to grab their attention first. I call it 'S.O.L.A.S.T.' or stick out like a sore thumb. The biggest campaigns in T.E. history were memorable and stuck out, this is the attitude you need to have to create your winning campaign.

And finally, you cannot expect results over night. This is a process and the more time and energy spent on building the relationship, the better. Get out and do things others won't, host a uStream event, create a cool give away or two, give people a reason to keep coming back and you WILL see results.

So list building...Worth it? Absolutely but there is so much more these days to proper list building rather than just throwing up a squeeze page.

Build a relationship with your list. I understand the size does not matter but the relationship. Thank you for this article.

So true, I have thought about it but never took it seriously. Maybe I should.

Jon, You are so right about the quality of the list. It should be called relationship building instead of list building. The future of business and marketing is definitley in the relationships you build online. Why do you think it's called "social" media? I am on dozens of lists and you know how many of those people have actually reached out and contacted me personally? Only 5. And most of those were the result of being on ThumbVu and Sweeva. Think about how much success you can have with a group of loyal online friends/acquaintances that you can actually converse with, vs. a list of 5000 people you mass email once a week? Lists can be good to start with, but they must be personalized some how. Just send out a quick, "Hi, how's your business doing this week?" or "What are you struggling with lately?" to a handful on your list and interact with them. Do that on a regular basis and you'll be surprised at the loyalty you will build and the friendships that will result!
