    1.    Balance of Trade:

    The value of a country’s exports minus the value of its imports. Unless specified as the balance of merchandise trade, it normally incorporates trade in services, including earnings (interest, dividends, etc.) on financial assets.
    2.    Balanced Trade:
    When a balance of trade equal to zero. (exports – imports = 0)
    3.    Balance of Payments:
    A list of all of a country’s international transactions for a given time period, usually one year. Payments into the country (receipts) are entered as positive numbers, called credits; Payments out of the country (payments) are entered as negative numbers called debits. A single numbers summarize all of a country’s international transactions: the balance of payments surplus.
    4.    MFN (Most Favoured Nation):
    The principle, fundamental to the GATT, of treating imports from a country on the same basis as that given to the most favoured other nation. That is, and with some exceptions, every country gets the lowest tariff that any country gets, and reductions in tariffs to one country are provided also to others.
    5.    Balanced Budget:
    A government budget surplus that is zero, thus with net tax revenue equaling expenditure. A balanced budget changes in policy or behavior is one which a component of the government budget, usually taxes, is adjusted as necessary to maintain a balanced budget.
    6.    Balanced Growth of an Economy:
    Growth of an economy in which all aspects of it, especially factors of production, grow at the same rate.
    7.    Bank Rate:
    The interest rate charges by a central bank to commercial banks for very short term loans.
    8.    Repo:
    Repo is “Repurchase Agreement”. An agreement to sell a security for a specified price and to buy it back later at another specified price. A repo is essentially a secured loan.
    9.    Repo Rate:
    Whenever the banks have any shortage of funds they can borrow it form RBI. Repo rate is the rate at which commercial banks borrows rupees from RBI. A reduction in the repo rate will help banks to get money at cheaper rate. When the repo rate increases borrowing form RBI becomes more expensive. 
    Current Repo Rate is: 8 %
    10.  Reverse Repo Rate:
    Reverse Repo rate is the rate at which RBI borrows money from commercial banks. Banks are always happy to lend money to RBI since their money is in the safe hands with a good interest. An increase in reverse repo rate can cause the banks to transfer more funds to RBI due to this attractive interest rates.
    Current R Repo Rate: 7%
    11.  CRR (Cash Reverse Ratio):
    CRR is the amount of funds that the banks have to keep with RBI. If RBI increases CRR, the available amount with the banks comes down. RBI is using this method (increase of CRR), to drain out the excessive money from the banks.
    Current CRR – 4.25%
    12.  SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio):
    SLR is the amount a commercial banks needs to maintain in the form of cash, or gold, or govt. approved securities (Bonds) before providing credit to its customers. SLR rate is determined and maintained by RBI in order to control the expansion of the bank credit.
    Current SLR is 23%
    13.  Need of SLR:
    With the SLR, the RBI can ensure the solvency of a commercial banks. It is also helpful to control the expansion of the Bank credits. By changing SLR rates, RBI can increase or decrease bank credit expansion. Also through SLR, RBI compels the commercial banks to invest in the government securities like govt. bonds.
    14.  Main use of SLR:
    SLR is used to control inflation and propel growth. Through SLR rate the money supply in the system can be controlled effectively.
    15.  Fiscal Deficit:
    A deficit in the government budget of a country and represents the excess of expenditure over income. So this is the amount of borrowed funds require by the government to meet its expenditures completely.
    16.  Direct Tax:
    A direct tax is that which is paid directly by someone to taxing authority. Income tax and property tax are an examples of direct tax. They are not shifted to somebody else.
    17.  Indirect Tax:
    This type of tax is not paid by someone to the authorities and it is actually passed on to the other in the form of increased cost. They are levied on goods and services produced or purchased. Excise Tax, Sales Tax, Vat, Entertainment tax are indirect taxes. 
    18.  NOSTRO Account:
    A Nostro account is maintained by an Indian Bank in the foreign countries.
    19.  VOSTRO Account:
    A Vostro account is maintained by a foreign bank in India with their corresponding bank.
    20.  SDR (Special Drawing Rights):
    SDR are new form of International reserve assets, created by the International Monetary Fund in 1967. The value of SDR is based on the portfolio of widely used countries and they are maintained as accounting entries and not as hard currency or physical assets like Gold.

    1. BSF celebrates 51st Raising Day
    i. The Border Security Force (BSF), the biggest border guarding force in the world celebrated its 51st Anniversary of Raising Day. Various cultural programmes were organised for BSF veterans and personnel during the Raising Day celebrations.

    2. Union HRD Ministry launches Vittiya Saksharata Abhiyan

    ii. It is campaign by Higher Educational institutions for digital econmy.


    3. President presents 2nd ICCR Ideologist award to Prof. Yu Long Yu

    i. The second Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Ideologist Award for the year 2016 was awarded to Prof. Yu Long Yu of China. 
    ii. He was presented with this award by President Pranab Mukherjee at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.


    4. Trial run of Lucknow Metro flagged off

    i. The Trial run of Lucknow Metro train was flagged off by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. He also dedicated the Metro Train Depot to the public.

    ii. The solo trial run of the metro was undertaken by two young women pilots Prachi Sharma and Priyanka Sharma . The trail run of the first phase of metro project covers around four kms between Transport Nagar and Single Nagar Metro stations.

    ii.  It will be India’s first private moon mission to be launched. It will be launched onboard of ISRO’s workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).


    7. UNESCO includes Yoga in Intangible Cultural Heritage list

    i. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has formally inscribed Yoga in its representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Decision in this regard was taken by the Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The declaration describes Yoga, an ancient Indian practice as a Human Treasure. It was unanimously supported by all the 24 members of inter-governmental Committee.
    ii. Other new inscriptions added in the list are Rumba dance (Cuba), Belgian beer (Belgium), Almezmar (Saudi Arabia), Kuresi  (Kazakhstan) and Khidr Elias feast (Iraq), Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals (Japan), Momoeria, New Year’s celebration (Greece), practice of organizing shared interests in cooperatives (Germany),Making and sharing flatbread (Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan), Culture of Jeju Haenyeo (South Korea), Gada system (Ethiopia),Tahteeb, stick game (Egypt), Music and dance of the merengue (Dominican Republic), Valencia Fallas festivity (Spain), Solar Term(China), Mangal Shobhajatra on Pahela Baishakh(Bangladesh).

    Magnus Carlsen wins 2016 Chess Championship title
    i. Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen of Norway has won the 2016 World Chess Championship for the third consecutive time. He retained the title after defeating Sergey Karjakin of Russia. Karjakin had tied against Carlsen in 12 regular rounds but was beaten in the final phase of four quickfire games.


    9. India's football federation wins Asian award

    i. The All-India Football Federation has won the Asian Football Council's Developing Member Association of the Year Award in Abu Dhabi.

    ii. The award is given on the basis of organisation of courses, seminars and competitions, grassroots, youth development and women's programmes and special projects. 
    In 2014, AIFF had earlier won the AFC President's Recognition Award for grassroots football.


    10. Nihonium becomes Asia's 1st Periodic Table element discovery

    i. Chemistry’s highest gatekeepers have accepted the newly proposed names for elements 113(Nihonium), 115(Moscovium), 117( Tennessine) and 118(Oganesson).
    ii. Periodic Table elements with atomic number 113, Nihonium (Nh) has become the first ever element to be discovered by an Asian country after it was officially revealed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
    iii. Along with three other elements that helped to complete the Periodic table, Nihonium was discovered and proposed by the RIKEN collaboration team in Japan.

    i. Emirates launched the world's shortest scheduled service on an Airbus A380, flying it from Dubai to Doha within 80 minutes. 
    ii.The 378-kilometre route is the shortest on which an Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, is used. The double-decker aircraft has 14 first class suites, 76 business class flat-bed seats and 429 economy class seats.

  • BANKING AWARENESS - SOME IMPORTANT BANKING TERMS
    1.    Balance of Trade:

    The value of a country’s exports minus the value of its imports. Unless specified as the balance of merchandise trade, it normally incorporates trade in services, including earnings (interest, dividends, etc.) on financial assets.
    2.    Balanced Trade:
    When a balance of trade equal to zero. (exports – imports = 0)
    3.    Balance of Payments:
    A list of all of a country’s international transactions for a given time period, usually one year. Payments into the country (receipts) are entered as positive numbers, called credits; Payments out of the country (payments) are entered as negative numbers called debits. A single numbers summarize all of a country’s international transactions: the balance of payments surplus.
    4.    MFN (Most Favoured Nation):
    The principle, fundamental to the GATT, of treating imports from a country on the same basis as that given to the most favoured other nation. That is, and with some exceptions, every country gets the lowest tariff that any country gets, and reductions in tariffs to one country are provided also to others.
    5.    Balanced Budget:
    A government budget surplus that is zero, thus with net tax revenue equaling expenditure. A balanced budget changes in policy or behavior is one which a component of the government budget, usually taxes, is adjusted as necessary to maintain a balanced budget.
    6.    Balanced Growth of an Economy:
    Growth of an economy in which all aspects of it, especially factors of production, grow at the same rate.
    7.    Bank Rate:
    The interest rate charges by a central bank to commercial banks for very short term loans.
    8.    Repo:
    Repo is “Repurchase Agreement”. An agreement to sell a security for a specified price and to buy it back later at another specified price. A repo is essentially a secured loan.
    9.    Repo Rate:
    Whenever the banks have any shortage of funds they can borrow it form RBI. Repo rate is the rate at which commercial banks borrows rupees from RBI. A reduction in the repo rate will help banks to get money at cheaper rate. When the repo rate increases borrowing form RBI becomes more expensive. 
    Current Repo Rate is: 8 %
    10.  Reverse Repo Rate:
    Reverse Repo rate is the rate at which RBI borrows money from commercial banks. Banks are always happy to lend money to RBI since their money is in the safe hands with a good interest. An increase in reverse repo rate can cause the banks to transfer more funds to RBI due to this attractive interest rates.
    Current R Repo Rate: 7%
    11.  CRR (Cash Reverse Ratio):
    CRR is the amount of funds that the banks have to keep with RBI. If RBI increases CRR, the available amount with the banks comes down. RBI is using this method (increase of CRR), to drain out the excessive money from the banks.
    Current CRR – 4.25%
    12.  SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio):
    SLR is the amount a commercial banks needs to maintain in the form of cash, or gold, or govt. approved securities (Bonds) before providing credit to its customers. SLR rate is determined and maintained by RBI in order to control the expansion of the bank credit.
    Current SLR is 23%
    13.  Need of SLR:
    With the SLR, the RBI can ensure the solvency of a commercial banks. It is also helpful to control the expansion of the Bank credits. By changing SLR rates, RBI can increase or decrease bank credit expansion. Also through SLR, RBI compels the commercial banks to invest in the government securities like govt. bonds.
    14.  Main use of SLR:
    SLR is used to control inflation and propel growth. Through SLR rate the money supply in the system can be controlled effectively.
    15.  Fiscal Deficit:
    A deficit in the government budget of a country and represents the excess of expenditure over income. So this is the amount of borrowed funds require by the government to meet its expenditures completely.
    16.  Direct Tax:
    A direct tax is that which is paid directly by someone to taxing authority. Income tax and property tax are an examples of direct tax. They are not shifted to somebody else.
    17.  Indirect Tax:
    This type of tax is not paid by someone to the authorities and it is actually passed on to the other in the form of increased cost. They are levied on goods and services produced or purchased. Excise Tax, Sales Tax, Vat, Entertainment tax are indirect taxes. 
    18.  NOSTRO Account:
    A Nostro account is maintained by an Indian Bank in the foreign countries.
    19.  VOSTRO Account:
    A Vostro account is maintained by a foreign bank in India with their corresponding bank.
    20.  SDR (Special Drawing Rights):
    SDR are new form of International reserve assets, created by the International Monetary Fund in 1967. The value of SDR is based on the portfolio of widely used countries and they are maintained as accounting entries and not as hard currency or physical assets like Gold.

    1. BSF celebrates 51st Raising Day
    i. The Border Security Force (BSF), the biggest border guarding force in the world celebrated its 51st Anniversary of Raising Day. Various cultural programmes were organised for BSF veterans and personnel during the Raising Day celebrations. 
    ii. On this occasion, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh presented prestigious “Maharana Pratap Trophy- 2016” on the BSF Punjab Frontier.

    2. Union HRD Ministry launches Vittiya Saksharata Abhiyan

    ii. It is campaign by Higher Educational institutions for digital econmy.


    3. President presents 2nd ICCR Ideologist award to Prof. Yu Long Yu

    i. The second Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Ideologist Award for the year 2016 was awarded to Prof. Yu Long Yu of China. 
    ii. He was presented with this award by President Pranab Mukherjee at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.


    4. Trial run of Lucknow Metro flagged off

    i. The Trial run of Lucknow Metro train was flagged off by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. He also dedicated the Metro Train Depot to the public.

    ii. The solo trial run of the metro was undertaken by two young women pilots Prachi Sharma and Priyanka Sharma . The trail run of the first phase of metro project covers around four kms between Transport Nagar and Single Nagar Metro stations.

    ii.  It will be India’s first private moon mission to be launched. It will be launched onboard of ISRO’s workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).


    7. UNESCO includes Yoga in Intangible Cultural Heritage list

    i. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has formally inscribed Yoga in its representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Decision in this regard was taken by the Inter-governmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage meeting held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The declaration describes Yoga, an ancient Indian practice as a Human Treasure. It was unanimously supported by all the 24 members of inter-governmental Committee.
    ii. Other new inscriptions added in the list are Rumba dance (Cuba), Belgian beer (Belgium), Almezmar (Saudi Arabia), Kuresi  (Kazakhstan) and Khidr Elias feast (Iraq), Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals (Japan), Momoeria, New Year’s celebration (Greece), practice of organizing shared interests in cooperatives (Germany),Making and sharing flatbread (Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan), Culture of Jeju Haenyeo (South Korea), Gada system (Ethiopia),Tahteeb, stick game (Egypt), Music and dance of the merengue (Dominican Republic), Valencia Fallas festivity (Spain), Solar Term(China), Mangal Shobhajatra on Pahela Baishakh(Bangladesh).

    Magnus Carlsen wins 2016 Chess Championship title
    i. Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen of Norway has won the 2016 World Chess Championship for the third consecutive time. He retained the title after defeating Sergey Karjakin of Russia. Karjakin had tied against Carlsen in 12 regular rounds but was beaten in the final phase of four quickfire games.


    9. India's football federation wins Asian award

    i. The All-India Football Federation has won the Asian Football Council's Developing Member Association of the Year Award in Abu Dhabi.

    ii. The award is given on the basis of organisation of courses, seminars and competitions, grassroots, youth development and women's programmes and special projects. 
    In 2014, AIFF had earlier won the AFC President's Recognition Award for grassroots football.


    10. Nihonium becomes Asia's 1st Periodic Table element discovery

    i. Chemistry’s highest gatekeepers have accepted the newly proposed names for elements 113(Nihonium), 115(Moscovium), 117( Tennessine) and 118(Oganesson).
    ii. Periodic Table elements with atomic number 113, Nihonium (Nh) has become the first ever element to be discovered by an Asian country after it was officially revealed by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
    iii. Along with three other elements that helped to complete the Periodic table, Nihonium was discovered and proposed by the RIKEN collaboration team in Japan.

    i. Emirates launched the world's shortest scheduled service on an Airbus A380, flying it from Dubai to Doha within 80 minutes. 
    ii.The 378-kilometre route is the shortest on which an Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, is used. The double-decker aircraft has 14 first class suites, 76 business class flat-bed seats and 429 economy class seats.
