The latest authentication or unlock feature is available in the new 2.19.20.19 beta update published through TestFlight beta program. The new update now adds fingerprint lock to the WhatsApp application.
WhatsApp is rolling out its latest authentication feature for all beta users. The authentication feature is a part of other new features which WhatsApp will be starting to enable their beta users after opening the first official public beta program. The latest authentication or unlock feature is available in the new 2.19.20.19 beta update published through TestFlight beta program. The new update now adds fingerprint lock to the WhatsApp application on the iPhone. The new beta feature rollout was spotted by WABetainfo.

If the user is on the iPhone X or above, then FaceID unlock is available. However, for iPhone below that, TouchID or passcode is available. In the WhatsApp settings, if users choose Screen Lock, they can choose to start the authentication feature for their devices. Starting the feature will, however, still allow users to reply to received messages straight from the locked screen notifications and also answer WhatsApp calls without any authentication.

The user will have to configure the TouchID or FaceID unlock feature on WhatsApp. After the configuration is done, users will have to shut down the app and restart it again. After that users can authenticate their identity in order to use WhatsApp. If the iPhone TouchID fails, users can also log in via passcode. For iPhone X, and above, the FaceID works.

When the biometric unlock security feature is enabled on WhatsApp, the preview snapshot of the app will go empty and will show nothing. In terms of privacy, the fingerprint and the face unlock data are encrypted in your iPhone. WhatsApp will not get your security data as it is managed on phone-level access and extraction of this information is not possible. Hence it could be said that the fingerprint unlock feature for WhatsApp is safe to be used.
