The Internet has changed the way we do business. I've been involved in various forms of marketing for a number of years and now my main focus is Affiliate Marketing online.

While I do promote a few different affiliate products and services, there is one particular affiliate program that is my favourite and that I am focusing on to grow a second income.

That catchphrase - Grow a Second Income - is one of the phrases used by my affiliate company of choice and I particularly like the phrase because it properly represents the way we should be building our Internet businesses.

First we plant the seeds; then we nurture them; then we watch them grow.

Just like gardening, it takes time and patience and dedication to grow a second income. Some enthusiastic marketers may try to tell you that it is quick and easy, but the truth is there is rarely anything even close to overnight success for most people. It takes time.

The results are slow in the beginning, but if you stick with it through the seasons, you will be rewarded.

The problem most people have is they get impatient and then they switch to a new program and start all over again. It's like spending all your money on seed and fertilizer, planting the seeds and then getting up the next morning expecting fully grown, fruit-bearing plants. When you find nothing has come up yet, you plow it all under and start over again in a different field. That's just not how it works!

Treat your Internet business like a garden project. Plant your seeds, be patient, don't give up on your investment, and eventually you WILL successfully grow a second income!

There are two primary ways to grow a second income online:

1) Direct Sales: You find products and/or services you feel comfortable selling and you market and promote them, generate sales, and earn sales commissions as an affiliate for that company.

2) Affiliate Marketing with Residual Income: You find an Affiliate Marketing company that lets you earn direct sales commissions from sales you generate, and indirect commissions (and/or other benefits) from sales generated by other affiliates who you recruit and sponsor into the business.

I use both methods but I prefer the Residual Income method because it lets you leverage your time and efforts and offers the potential for ongoing monthly income whether you are actively generating sales or not.

The advantage of the Direct Sales method is that you are responsible only for yourself and your own performance. In contrast, the Residual Income method requires that you actively recruit other marketers and that you coach and train them to duplicate your efforts.

The advantage of the Residual Income method, as mentioned earlier, is that you are creating a sales team that could potentially keep producing income for you even when you are not actively involved. In contrast, the Direct Sales method typically requires that you, personally, continually keep generating new sales.

So . . . which would you prefer?

They both have their benefits and drawbacks. The one problem with Direct Sales is that when you quit working, the sales and the income stops. On the other hand, with Residual Income, if you take time to build your foundation, it could keep producing income for years to come.

I mentioned earlier how building a home-based Internet business and growing a second income can take some time. Here is a personal example of focus, vision and determination.

I first started marketing online in 2007. At that time, I signed up for the Google AdSense program and for the ClickBank affiliate program. Even though I included AdSense on all of my websites and promoted ClickBank products diligently, I never started to make any money with either of them until over the past year.

Thanks to my dedication and determination, I am finally finding the right mix of methods and products to earn some income from those programs. If I had lost faith and given up, I would be no better today than when I started. But I stuck with it and now I am glad I did!

If your aim is to grow a second income, you need to have clarity of vision, a definite plan, and lots of determination!

I have discovered that many aspiring entrepreneurs set income goals far beyond their ability to believe (in the beginning) and then become frustrated when they see how slow their progress is and far they have to go to reach their lofty income goal.

It is great to have high second income goals, but they should be viewed as long-term goals. Our action plans should include short=term and medium-term goals to allow us to stay focused and enthusiastic while we strive to reach our big goals.

Watch out for those money-making programs that "promise" to show you haw to make tens of thousands of dollars a month quickly and easily: it's not going to happen.

Many aspiring Internet Marketers, once they learn how much work and commitment is involved, would love to know how to make just a hundred dollars a month, never mind those outlandish "six figure" incomes that so many programs like to promise!

Aim high. Dream big. Plan to get their in easy to manage incremental steps. That is a much more realistic way to develop a second income.

How much money counts as a "Second Income"?

Everybody sets their own figure as an income goal. Some people aim for thousands a month. Others are happy with a couple of hundred dollars a month.

A second income could mean any amount of money - it's up to the individual. Also, as we become more experienced and our monthly income grows, our goals may change.

When I first started marketing online, if I made $20 dollars a month I was happy! At that time, I just needed to assure myself that making money online was possible.

After a while, a few of my mentors worked out a plan to help their students learn how to earn at least $100 a month. That was great, too, because we could see our skills and our income progressing.

Since that time, equipped with greater marketing skills, much more confidence, and bigger second income goals, I have been focusing on my primary Internet income opportunity and seeing my income increase gradually by the month.

It's not a "get-rich-quick" scheme and there is no promise or expectation of overnight success. It is a business like any other legitimate business that takes time, planning, daily application and plenty of focus and determination.

I used to chase around from one opportunity to another, looking for the "easy way" but I have learned that there is no easy way. You have to take both yourself and your business seriously, follow a proven plan, and stick with it. It's working for me!

Why do people want to grow a second income? Everybody has different reasons.

I can still remember a time when a typical family of two parents and a couple of children would need only one person working outside the home as the income provider. The other spouse would stay home to look after the kids and help create a stable environment for everybody.

Since then, society has changed and the economy has changed such that in so many cases now a family needs two incomes just to pay the bills, provide for the necessities and hopefully enjoy a reasonable lifestyle.

Problem is, in some cases it is just not possible for both parents to work outside of the home. In other cases, jobs are just so scarce that they can't always be found (or counted on) for the second party, or maybe the cost of childcare and transportation exceeds the value of the pay received at the job.

So, many families, and many individuals on their own, look to other sources of growing a second income. Something they can do comfortably from home; something they can do with a few minutes of "free" time here and there. Something that allows them to develop their skills while doing something they enjoy doing.

The Internet has opened the door to so many possibilities for a second income!

There have always been a variety of ways to grow a second income.

I started (many years ago!) as a home-based mail order marketer. That led into direct sales, then multi-level marketing and network marketing. Eventually, I bit the bullet and got involved on the World Wide Web as an Internet Marketer.

Now, I am combining a unique mix of network marketing, direct sales and Internet Marketing, all with one online program. Chances are, if you are reading this, you are doing something similar with your program of choice.

Whatever type of marketing you choose, it all comes down to a foundation of marketing and selling. We are always trying to sell something to someone in some way.

Develop your selling skills and you will have it made!

Yesterday, I mentioned "selling skills." In my opinion, everything about Internet Marketing and growing a second income has to do with sales and the selling process.

There are some marketing plans that try to convince you that no selling is involved, but come on, you still have to SHOW the plan to someone and CONVINCE them to join it or buy something ... so, THAT is still selling.

A few categories of things that you might sell are:

- physical goods or products
- services
- subscriptions

You might sell things as a one-time purchase, or you might sell something as a subscription or a monthly automatic purchase.

You might focus on a niche product or service, or you might promote a wide array of products and services.

What you choose to sell will determine both how you go about marketing it and also WHO you are targeting.

Successful sellers know their market, period. And then design their presentations and other marketing content accordingly. Successful sellers plan effectively and execute professionally.

Grow a Second Income

One of the themes of the affiliate marketing company that I promote (SFI) is "Grow a Second Income".

There was a time in Internet Marketing where every marketing opportunity was telling you to quit your job and get rich quick with the latest, greatest, next, best program of the month. Well, people have become smarter and most people now realize that success in this business does not happen over night.

Building a business online is the same as offline: it takes vision, planning, effort, commitment and determination.

So, today we coach people how to grow a second income while still keeping their "day" job. Of course, if you are in a position to quit your day job and focus entirely on your Internet business, as many are doing, then all the better!

But for most people, it is a part time thing that truly takes a lot of focus and determination. You CAN grow a second income ... if that is your desire and you make it your goal.

You can grow a second income online or off line, it all depends on your interests, your skills, your comfort zone and most of all, your dreams and ambitions.

If you plan to build your business online, then one of the choices you may have to make is whether or not to market using your own domain name and website. There are advantages to both.

~ Not your own website: Many affiliate marketers avoid the potential hassle and responsibility of running their own website by simply promoting the free gateway websites provided by the affiliate company they belong to or promote.

The advantage is that you have no website worries; you just advertise and promote the gateway link where ever you can. The disadvantage is that you have no control over the affiliate gateway website and you have no opportunity to build your own email list of prospects.

~ With your own domain name and website: Smart marketers who are in this business for the long term understand that you really need to market with your own site so you can build your brand as a serious and dependable marketer. Yes, you are responsible for maintaining the site and finding ways to add fresh new content regularly, but the great thing is it is your own site and you can promote whatever you want on it; you are not limited to the products or services of just one affiliate company.

The other advantage is that you can use some kind of capture form to encourage visitors to give you their email address for follow-up messages.

However you approach the prospect of growing a second income, you should know what your goals are, develop a plan of action to meet those goals, and dedicate yourself to doing the necessary things to assure your success.
