Backlinks are so vital to the success of an Internet Marketing business! But high quality backlinks carry more weight than low quality backlinks, meaning you can have tons of low quality backlinks and this may not help your business at all.

Case in point: a personal example. On one of my older websites I was very successful at getting backlinks. I had tens of thousands of backlinks, compared to other similar marketers who may only have had a few hundred or a few thousand.

Did all of these backlinks help me? No. They were mostly low quality links. They did not help me to get more traffic and they definitely did not produce many sales.

Go for quality links, authority links, links that can produce value for your website.

So, further to my previous post, how did I GET all of those low quality backlinks?

Well, when I was new and enthusiastic as an Internet Marketer, I signed up for a couple of services that submitted my website to a zillion (made-up number) websites, thinking I was doing the right thing by getting a ton of backlinks. At that time I did not know about high and low quality links, authority sites, and so on.

I am sure that a few of the sites being submitted to were not bad, but most of them turned out to be wimpy sites with little true value and the result was that the search engines didn't show me very much love! lol. That was definitely money NOT well spent!

It is so much better to spend a little time building a few QUALITY links than to waste your time on low quality links.

What's your favourite way to get backlinks?

There are a number of ways to get them, including social bookmarking, article directories, website directories, guest blogging, forum posting, blog commenting and more. It is good to build a variety of types of backlinks because this will look normal and natural to the search engines. Plus, it will help you get free traffic from a variety of places that you might not reach through other means.

I mentioned earlier how buying backlinks may not necessarily be a good way to build backlinks. Your aim is to get good quality backlinks. It is better to get a few high quality links each month than to get dozens or hundreds of low quality links.

There are some services that buy and sell backlinks. I have never used them and I would never use them. Getting links from these sources could result in your website being flagged by the search engines.

There are also some services that "rent" backlinks to you - in other words, they charge you each month for the links. Instead of doing this, I recommend that you build good quality backlinks using some of the more traditional methods, such as article marketing, guest blogging, social bookmarking, forum posting and so on.

Backlinking Tip:

It is particularly valuable to create backlinks from websites that are very similar to yours in content and purpose. Getting a backlink from a sports website back to your business opportunities website may NOT be especially purposeful.

Whenever possible, use anchor text in the link you place on another website. The anchor text should be the keywords or keyword phrase that the page on your site that the link points to is optimized for.

The result of recent and ongoing search engine algorithm changes and updates is that Internet Marketers really need to take a personal approach to their optimization strategies, in particular, building backlinks.

Automated systems, services and practices may be targeted and penalized by the search engines. Your aim should be to build a wide variety of types of backlinks and not to focus too heavily on one type.

The more natural your backlink profile looks, the less trouble you should have with search engine penalization.

Here's something new to consider, which I believe is a result of the recent Penguin Update. It has always been a good idea to use anchor text in your links, but anchor text "diversity" has now taken on new meaning.

What this means is that if you have too many links with the same anchor text, you may be penalized. Apparently, this looks too "structured" to the search engines and does not look sufficiently "natural."

So, if you are building a lot of links to a particular page, then make sure to use a variety of different keywords in your anchor text. You will still want the keywords to be relative to the page they point to, but just don't keep using the same keywords in every link you build.

Hey, Friends:

Have you changed your backlinking strategies over the past few months with the Penguin update and other search engine changes?

What has been your experience with your traffic statistics in recent weeks? What backlinking methods or strategies do you recommend? What are you hearing out in the field, what are the experts telling you to do about backlinking?

Share your thoughts, experiences, etc., here.

As noted in recent posts, as Internet Marketers, our backlinking strategies have been forced to change over the past year because of search engine updates. Not a bad thing because it will weed out bad practices and (hopefully) some of the spammers and scammers.

But it does create a challenge for marketers who are legitimately trying to build their businesses. I wrote a blog post yesterday on the topic because I've been looking for ways to improve my backlinks and, especially, my search engine traffic.

The focus of my post was to encourage the use of "White Hat" link building practices. That is, methods that are acceptable to the search engines and that will not get you in trouble, or penalized or get your website banned altogether.

The idea is to focus on good quality content and write it with the reader in mind, then find ways to get links back from sites that are related to the topic of your content. That's a start!
