Great photo collage, Marisa, thanks for posting the link to this vid. It's amazing how social some animals can be. (However, for those of us who Believe, there was a time "In the beginning" when animals ALL got along that way.)

I saw the one with the elephant and the dog before - I was going to list it but somehow I got to watching other videos and forgot all about it. It is wonderful .. :)

I wanted to share another video with you but it has little to do with friends but it is absolutely amazing. This is of animals in the wild and .... can be hard to watch ... but believe me it is worth it. I saw it on CNN a long time ago.

Sorry Dee I did say it can be hard to watch. It has a happy ending in more than one way. The baby lived through unbelievable odds and the herd united in a way that is not seen. At least I hope the baby lived, it is hard to believe but it walked away quite easily. You had to be cheering in the end - or not I guess.

About the Battle at Kruger video. I've seen it before and it is an amazing video. What was the chances of being there and to be a witness. It's nature...and it does have a happy ending...sorta...but maybe now for the cats. It reminded me of a day when I heard a rustling sound in my front yard. It was my cat Catcher chasing a mouse around the tree in our front yard. I didn't really think that he would catch the mouse but I was wrong. He brought it to me as a present the next day.

Amazing video. I've seen it before, too. That poor calf, after being chewed, clawed and pulled apart in a tug-o-war! It makes me sad to watch, but after all, that is the nature of nature. They all have to survive somehow. Like Marisa mentioned, the herd united, which seems surprising, except they are wild and have probably encountered the big cats before.

Doddee mentioned her cat and mouse experience, something that we have witnessed a number of times with cats in our yard. Cats are smart, but mice can sometimes be very aggressive in defending themselves.

On another occasion, I noticed that the numerous wild birds in our backyard all of a sudden disappeared one day, then a hawk landed in the main tree. He sat there for a long, long time preening himself and with his back to the yard where our bird feeders are. He was on the opposite side of the tree, but I could see him clearly and he looked like a big, dumb partridge just sitting there.

After about 15-20 minutes, one of the chickadees got brave and came and landed on the side of the tree facing into the yard. In a flash, that hawk was after the chickadee and for a few brief seconds they circled around in and out of the branches of the tree like a blur. I couldn't believe the hawk could move and maneuver so quickly through the branches!

Seconds later, he had the chickadee and began his meal. It is sad to see and to think about, but again, that's how nature survives.

(Hunting for pleasure: that's another story you don't want to get me started on!)

GT :-)

We have had similar situations where the birds seem to disappear from the yard and then spot a hawk. One day a hawk flew into the French doors and unlike the smaller birds that usually get knocked out the hawk ended up with a broken neck.

Hi, Marisa: Fortunately, we see very few hawks coming after "our" birds. But every once in a while all sign of life suddenly disappears and I always wonder if there is a hawk overhead and everybody is hiding!

We have numerous species of birds and they are frequently smacking into the kitchen window. There have only been a few times where I know they managed to do themselves in. Funny you should mention it; just yesterday I was thinking of buying those little window stickers (of hawks!) that seem to keep the birds from hitting the window.

Our other "unusual pet friends" are the squirrels. Some are more friendly than others. Some years we get one or two who don't run away unless you approach them. Others disappear at the sound of the door latch!

There is currently a pair hanging around that I am guessing are a mating pair. Sometimes one chases the other out into the woods and through the trees - it's hilarious.

... And then I wonder what they think when they see my wife and I leave the house together? They watch us and I wonder if they're waiting to see if one of us chases the other into the woods! LOL

GT :-)
