The Words Of Peter Jones (Dragens Den)
‘Successful entrepreneurs have two fantastic qualities: determination and sheer perseverance. Tycoons know when to persevere and when not to. Most of the Tycoons I know, including myself, have all experienced failure at some stage or another, often more than once. Yet it hasn’t stopped us from bouncing back and becoming very successful.
In fact, experiencing failure appears to act as a spur to succeeding next time. When I start a new business or invest in one, there is one trait that is always present – a determination to win and be successful. I will keep going when the going gets tough. Even roadblocks and dead ends don’t discourage Tycoons, Tycoons learn to adapt and change goals and direction if necessary in order to achieve the success they want. Obstacles are there to be overcome. How boring would life be without any challenges?
Perseverance is about developing a keep-on-going-on attitude, while flexibly adapting as you strive to grow and improve your business.
Building a business takes time and hard work. The reason Tycoons succeed is because they act fast and push the boundaries. Tycoons refuse to take ‘no’ for an answer or give up. The Tycoon is relentless in the pursuit of his or her goals.
Making your dream come true is never easy as easy you think it will be, and it can take years to develop before you reap the rewards. Tycoons go the extra mile.
Perseverance, sheer determination and tenacity are core characteristics of the mindset of a Tycoon. Successful entrepreneurs battle against all the odds and build their business and always appreciate when it is time to get out, by selling the business, cutting losses or finding better management to take the company forward. There is a fine line between perseverance and being obstinate, though. Perseverance sometimes means taking huge risks, but you continue at your peril if you fall on the wrong side of the line. Risks must always be highly calculated.
I believe that persistence is probably the most important aspect on the mindset of any successful Tycoon, and my own. I will persevere and go that bit further then others in order to achieve my goals. If it means working all the hours I can stay awake, seven days a week, 365 days a year, I would do it in order to succeed. It’s a shame that this isn’t physically possible.
In fact, I think my smartest business move was not giving up, because there have been times when I’ve created a business and things have not gone well. I could have quite easily just said ‘I can’t do this, I’m giving up.’ Most people would say my smartest business move was acquiring this business, or doing that type of deal. Well, for me it isn’t. My smartest move in my business career has been prevailing ‘never giving up’ strategy.’
