  • Bedbugs are No Laughing Matter.... 2010-09-09T10:13:00.000-07:00
After doing a little searching on Facebook, I see many people take bedbugs as a joke. Maybe its because we haven't seen any before this in over 50 years, and many people still think its a myth. Maybe its because of misunderstanding, because we aren't familiar with dealing with this kind of infestation. But trust me, bedbugs are no laughing matter.

1 in 7 Households in Cincinnati Have Bedbugs

This statistic was given in 2008 by NKU (For more information click here). And this isn't a clean house/ dirty house problem either. Bedbugs are attracted to human blood, so all that stands between you and an infestation (if you haven't been battling one already), is the opportunity for a queen to get into your home. And this could be anywhere you go, any friend you visit, or even any office you happen to visit.

Bedbugs cause a lot more than sleepless nights
A person suffering from a bedbug infestation over an extended period of time has a lot more to deal with than just a little lost sleep. There are some members of the population that are allergic to the bites themselves, causing swelling and fever in the area bitten. Also, studies have shown that people exposed to bedbugs over long periods of time can develop a form of Post-Traumatic Stress syndrome; where the individual frequently feels that something is crawling on their skin, or even biting them, when there is nothing there.

The biggest key to getting rid of bedbugs is knowledge
There are methods out there to getting rid of bedbugs; however, since many people are embarrassed to say they have them, understandably due to the ridiculing reaction that they may get, the right information is not being passed around. If we can band together and share strategies on how to get rid of this pest, we can eradicate this problem once and for all.

I write the above to say this. If you know someone with bedbugs, don't look down on them and make them feel bad because of their situation. Having bedbugs is no laughing matter; and we should all pitch in to help those affected, because if we don't stop the problem now, it will affect all who live in Cincinnati, and the nation.
  • My Personal Saga with Bedbugs, Part 2 2010-09-08T11:10:00.000-07:00
Sorry for not getting back to you yesterday, had a paper run to take care of. When I left off, I had moved out of my grandmother's house into my own apartment.

Note, this was subsidized housing, a hot spot for bedbugs in Cincinnati. This isn't to say that people like us are less kempt in the house hold area; just when it comes to pest control, we are more or less at the mercy of whatever the landlord decides to to about the issue. low income in this case means not enough money for the pesticides that seem to be effective for the most part.

Anyway, it was a good four months after moving in that I began to see the bedbugs again. Repeating the routine that I began at my grandmother's house, I bought the first thing that said "kills bedbugs" and doused the house with it; coughing, sneezing, and spluttering the whole time. Powders, sprays, you name it I tried it. In 4 months I had spent more on pest control than gas and electric!

This isn't to say that management wasn't trying to do anything; but they sure dragged their feet about doing it. In mid April of this year, they finally sent a person to the property to treat for the bedbugs. This chemical required us to be out of the house for two hours, and for me to bag up all my clothes in garbage bags, and not to take them out until I'd had them laundered.

And therein lay the problem. On public assistance and bills eating the majority of that up, there was no way that I could wash all of my clothes at one time. Slowly but surely, I had to open up the bags. The treatment had worked, although who knows what poisons they left in here, but simply being poor forced me to re-infest my own house.

To make matters worse, when I called the rent office to see if they could retreat the house; I find that the property managers were slumlords that disappeared with a lot of government money. Here's the news story:

This put all repairs and pest control on hold until we got new owners.

Fast forward to mid-august, Cincinnati Public Schools is back in session. I have been fighting the bedbugs in my house the best way I knew how, at one point sending my daughter to the hospital with an allergic reaction to the pesticides I was using.

The school sent my babies home because a bedbug was seen crawling off my daughter. Many students of the school live in my complex, and even more in the school itself. No one can say if it truly came from my daughter, or if it crawled off of someone else. Nonetheless they sent my babies home, and sent message to the new property managers that they must treat my home within the next 24 hours.

I prepare my house just as before, and make plans to leave as soon as they got to the house. However, the company that the property managers chose did not use a poison where we had to leave. I still suspect, although I don't have proof, that they sprayed the wrong pesticide in my home; however this treatment seemed only to make things worse.

That is when I first heard of Cedar oil. A new shop had opened up boasting a natural cure for bedbugs that wouldn't harm me or my children. At this point, I was ready to try anything to get them out of my house. I bought a small bottle just to find out if it did work.

When I got home, I sprayed all the beds and couches with a light mist, as instructed by the store owner. As the cedar smell filled the air, I was reminded of my grandmother's cedar chest. I just happened to see a bedbug crawling across a pillow, and sprayed it directly. I watched in awe as the thing stood straight up on all six legs, and curled backwards!

I knew then that I had found the cure for the bedbugs. Being very net savvy, I started looking for a wholesaler of cedar oil, which lead me to Cedar Oil Industries. The representative showed me videos of their product and how I can use it to rid my house of all pests. It was truly a waste of time, I already knew that the product worked, I wanted to know how I could spread the word about it so we can get Cincinnati off the bedbug list!!!!

Long story short, I am waiting today for my fogging machine and my first bottle of Dr. Ben's Evictor, on pins and needles as of yet. I am going to record my treatment and results over the next week, for the world to see, so all stay tuned....

  • My Personal Saga with bedbugs, Part 1 2010-09-06T08:34:00.000-07:00
Until 2004, I’d always thought that bedbugs were some mythical creature that parents spoke of to children as they drifted off to sleep. I had to learn that lesson the hard way as a neighbor and good friend of mine was infested. After visiting with her, I returned to my downstairs apartment with huge welts of itchy bumps that had a fever as well. After two such visits, her father informed me of what was going on, and I decided not to visit until they had things under control.

Luckily, the bugs never infested my home in the same apartment building, and eventually they did get the situation under control. I thought that would be my last encounter with the insects. I kept a clean household, and if I ever found one at home, I would just get the proper chemicals to treat the problem and that would be that. Little did I know the saga that was about to unfold between me and these vampires.

It wasn’t spoken of much then, but an epidemic of these creatures that would touch every sector you can think of in American Society was beginning to brew. The environmentalists that were worried about thin Eagle eggs back in the early 90’s never figured that taking away the pesticide DDT would upset the very level of quality of life in the United States; but that shining realization would come very soon to bite everyone in the ass. However, not much would be done by local government until 2008

This would also be the next time the enemy and I would cross paths. I and my two children had left the apartment complex I was in to move with my grandmother for a while in the suburbs. Although it is still disputed to this day how the infestation was started, they were first found in my sister’s bedroom on a night she was away and I decided to sleep in there. Immediately the mattress was removed and store-bought pesticide specially formulated for bedbugs was applied to the house.

I was the one commissioned to spray the house with the treatment. After spraying it a few times my allergies began to act up. The spray caused me to cough, eyes to water, and nose to run. Since my grandmother had purchased the spray, I made sure to note to her “This stuff better work well, it’s about to kill me!!!” We laughed that day, but then I didn’t know how true that statement was.

It wasn't until just recently that I learned that pesticides you buy over the counter and those used by professional pest control operators (known as PCOs) can cause such things as breast cancer, weakened immune system, fetal death and birth defects, Parkinson's disease, and even brain cancer! (To learn more about these issues and the chemicals that cause them, click here

This treatment seemed to work for a while, however in a few months the problem resurfaced in the basement of the house. We took the same treatment, plus laundered all the clothes and bed linens. It seemed after that we had gotten rid of them for good.

Cincinnati City Council would create a “BedBug Task Force” in order to address the growing bedbug problem. At this point, a study done by the University of Cincinnati revealed that 14.5% of households (one in seven) were infested. Although the hope of creating this task force was to put Cincinnati on the path of eradicating this epidemic; shortly after its inception it was found that the group would not have enough funding to even continue the hotline set up for apartment tenants to report landlords.

Furthermore, the number was not publicized enough. People to this day still aren’t aware that such a number was in place.

Fast forward to last year. After occasional outbreaks in my grandmother’s household and buying every over the counter product for bedbugs known to man, we were able once again to get a temporary hold on the infestation, and I moved out to my own apartment in Subsidized housing. I inspected the apartment and saw no sign of bedbugs, only a slight roach problem. Knowing that I had solved my problem with bedbugs before(yeah right), I saw no problem with moving in…..

Stay tuned to tomorrow’s post, where I bring you up to my attack plan for today!
  • Welcome To My Blog! Here's what I plan to do 2010-09-03T21:11:00.000-07:00
Thank you all for coming here. Bedbugs are a growing issue for everyone in the US, especially those like myself in the Cincinnati Area. The households that are most affected in this epidemic are those who are under the poverty line who are not aware of and do not have access to affordable treatment methods.

In my research, I've found that even though Cincinnati, Ohio is ranked number 4 in bedbug infestations in the nation, not many people are talking about the issue. My goal with this blog is to educate and form a community of awareness, starting with the very people that are most effected by this plight, low income families. I will provide all good information that I come across, plus updates on my personal struggle and how I will solve this problem.

The only way to solve this crisis is through knowledge and education. Sign up for updates to this blog and be the first to get information on my personal struggle with bedbugs, and be the first to be alerted with breaking news on Cincinnati's struggle with bedbugs. If we create a public conversation about this issue, it will be impossible to ignore.

Stay tuned for the next post, where I will fill you in on just who I am and my personal struggle with bedbugs thus far!
