How to Make a Dark Room Brighter & Lighter

May 15th 2019 at 3:14 AM

If you live in the UK, then you probably have at least one room in your home that is particularly dark. And that isn't even counting the weather, which is usually wet, grey, and cloudy.  It's enough to put anybody in a bad mood but fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to help bring more light into your home to make it feel brighter and lighter.

In this article, we are going to look at some of the things that you can do to help bring more light into your home. This will help lift your mood and create a better atmosphere at home.

Tip 1: Install a Window

Ok, so we going to start with the obvious, and the first thing that you should do if you don't have enough light and you have space, and money to do so, is to install a window.

A new window will set you back a couple of thousand pounds but it is an investment that is well worth it and it can even add value to your property so that in the long-term you aren't actually losing out financially.

Tip 2: Use a Bright Colour

Some colours are associated with lightness and brightness. By painting the room in this colour, it will bring vibrancy to the space. Good colours in this respect are bright orange and yellow.  They are both the colour of sunshine after all.

Tip 3: Use a White Colour

If you find the previous tip is too garish, and you're looking for something a little less outlandish, then you could always paint your home in a bright white colour.

White paint will help to reflect more light around the home and so it will make the home feel bigger and brighter without having to use an unusual coloured paint.

You can further emphasise this phenomenon by choosing a paint that has light reflecting particles. This will enhance the effect of light bouncing around the room.

Just a word of warning though, you need to choose a warm white colour. Otherwise, it can feel too clinical.

Tip 4: Use Mirrors

The more like that you can get into a space, the lighter and brighter it will look and feel. Mirrors are a fantastic trick for doing this. You can buy one or two mirrors for the space, but you can also choose vertical radiators that have a reflective surface. They don't necessarily function as mirrors, but they have the same effect of bringing greater amounts of light to your space.

Tip 5:  Declutter

Finally, something that can really make a room feel dark and dingy is when it has too much furniture in it. You should be a little bit ruthless here and get rid of anything that you don't need so that you create that openness and spaciousness that is associated with brightness.

A good little trick here is to swap horizontal radiators for vertical radiators. Not only do they take up less usable space, but they also change the perspective of the room, making the room appear taller.

Follow the advice above and you will soon create a space that is beautiful and airy.
