  • Strengthen bones meds and esophageal cancer 2010-09-05T07:48:00.000-07:00

Those who follow the long-term treatment with drugs to strengthen bones shows an almost double risk of developing esophageal cancer, a study conducted by a team of researchers at Oxford University.

The study involved about 80,000 patients and took place over seven years.
Results showed that the number of people who used drugs to strengthen bones (by mouth) and have developed esophageal cancer was 1.93 higher than the number of people who have not used such drugs.

Although the results of this research suggests that drugs against osteoporosis may have an influence on the development of cancer, more studies are needed to determine the exact role and mechanism of such effect.

Researcher Jane Green said that those following treatment with drugs against osteoporosis do not have to worry; the risk of developing esophageal cancer is quite low and can be neglected.

  • Breast Cancer and Vitamin D 2010-04-05T02:37:00.000-07:00

A recent study by U.S. scientists has shown that almost 70% of women living with breast cancer who participated in the study show a deficiency of vitamin D in the body.

Although according to the U.S. Institute of Medicine of the optimal amount of vitamin D in the body should be about 32 nanograms per milliliter of vitamin D, results have shown much smaller amounts of about 27 nanograms per milliliter.

These results are not surprising, as other previous studies have shown that most people have studied various nutrient deficiencies in the body, but cautions that women suffering from breast cancer are more exposed, as if their vitamin D deficiency has a high greater danger. Vitamin D deficiency, aggravated due to chemotherapy and other treatments followed may have adverse effects on sick: increased fatigue, muscle pain, bone less strong (increased risk of fractures), heart rhythm disturbances, low body immunity, sleep irregularities, sudden changes of mood, depression.

Vitamin D has an important role for calcium and phosphorus metabolism in the body, produces vitamin D deficiency and deficiencies of calcium and phosphorus, the drawbacks caused by them.

Consequently, it is necessary to administer additional vitamin D women suffering from breast cancer and follow strict level of this vitamin in their body.

Vitamin D can be obtained either by sunlight (beware duration of exposure) and in various foods: fish oil, fish, eggs (yolk), milk, cereals.

  • What is ORAC? 2010-01-09T01:47:00.000-08:00
Free radicals have an important role in large number of biological processes, some of which are necessary for life, such as the intracellular killing of bacteria by phagocytic cells such as granulocytes and macrophages. Free radicals have also been implicated in certain cell signaling processes. Many diseases have their origin in inadequate free radicals activity in the body. Many forms of cancer are thought to be the result of reactions between free radicals and DNA, resulting in mutations that can adversely affect the cell cycle and potentially lead to malignancy. Some of the symptoms of aging such as atherosclerosis are also attributed to free-radical induced oxidation of many of the chemicals making up the body. In addition free radicals contribute to alcohol-induced liver damage, perhaps more than alcohol itself. Radicals in cigarette smoke have been implicated in inactivation of alpha 1-antitrypsin in the lung. This process promotes the development of emphysema.

Knowing this, there was developed a method of measuring antioxidant capacities in biological samples. The method is called ORAC – an acronym for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. It has been discovered that a small group of super foods have up to twenty times the antioxidant power of other foods. This is why everybody recommends us to eat vegetables and fruits. It is recommended that we eat foods containing at least 3,000 ORAC units a day.

Here is a table containing some foods and their ORAC score.

  • Is Depression Linked to Migraines? 2010-01-09T00:30:00.000-08:00

There is no evidence if migraines lead to depression or whether depression leads to headaches, but one certainty is that the two diseases are related. This is the result of a study conducted by Carmen Molgat, assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and Scott Patten, professor of psychiatry at the Calgary University from Calgary, Alberta.

The study conducted by the two was based on a sample of 130,000 people in Canada. Monitoring study conducted for several medical conditions, including migraines and depression crisis.

Another conclusion of the study was that both migraine and depression crises involve brain activity in serotonin receptors and transporters, receptors for dopamine and adrenaline.

This is very important for finding new treatments for both disorders (depression and migraine), as it found that the treatments for migraine have positive effects on depression and antidepressants positively affect migraine crises.

  • 6 Things to Do to Reduce Migraines 2009-12-25T23:56:00.000-08:00

Real causes of migraine are not known yet, despite the fact research have been conducted in this field. This is why there is no medical treatment for migraines. Still, there are a number of things we can do to make migraine pain less severe and less frequent.

    - Relax: stress is a powerful enemy of the body: the heart beats more often, air is not properly circulating, and cells are not getting enough oxygen. This is why stress decreases the power of body to fight against sickness. If we learn to relax, we give our body more power to fight. You may try Yoga to learn how to deeply relax your body.

    - Allow the body to relax and re-energize itself by taking enough sleep. You must sleep at least 7-8 hours from 24. Going to bed at the same hour every day is beneficial for the body.

    - Do some exercise every day. Taking 30 minutes daily for a walk in the park can do miracles to your health.

    - Breathe fresh air. Almost all the diseases (cancer, infections and others) that affect us need low quality or lack of oxygen to develop. Taking fresh oxygen into your body will keep away many diseases away. Migraine is one of these.

    - Take care of what you eat. “You are what you eat”, they say. And they are right. Eat fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and fibers the body needs to be healthy. The beneficial role of fibers and antioxidants in the fight against cancer and other diseases is well-known. Also try not to eat red meat. White meat is very good as well: fish, chicken, turkey. Fish contains Omega 3 fatty acid, also known as “the elixir of happiness”, “the elixir of eternal youth” and so.

    - Water is vital for human body. Drinking good, clean water will provide the cells more oxygen and will help the body eliminate toxins and keep it in a good shape. It is said we must drink about 2 liters of water daily. Many common illnesses are not real, they are only signs the body desperately needs water. Do you drink many soda pops daily? Replace it with many glasses of clean water and you will feel better in only 2-3 days.

Are these things hard to put into practice? No, they are not. They are simple things, but if you take care of these, you will experience a better shape for your body and a better shape for your mind. Are you not convinced? Try these for only a month, and I guarantee you an improvement in your life.

Bunch-type pain: is severe and occurs suddenly, although it is of shorter duration, the pain may leave and return several times during the day.

-triggered by sinus headache from different cause: irritation of sinus, sinus infections, etc. Given its nature, this pain is often confused with “classic” migraine.
-type migraine "rebound" occurs in a waiver of certain drugs, abuse of drugs can cause this type of headache.
