How to be Comfortable and Look Stylish at the Same Time

Dec 1st 2018 at 12:26 PM

It’s a common misconception that comfort and style are mutually exclusive. Stylish outfits don’t have to be uncomfortable—and they shouldn’t be. If you’re anxious to go home and strip all of your clothes off every time you go out in a trendy outfit, you’re not wearing the right stylish pieces.

Building a wardrobe full of clothes that are simultaneously comfortable and stylish—not a mix of pieces that are one or the other—isn’t as tricky as you might think. Many comfortable styles are in line with current trends—think loungewear, athleisure pieces, and oversized sweaters. Modern fashion makes it easier than ever to be comfortable and look stylish at the same time.

1. Buy with Comfort in Mind

When you go shopping, pay attention to how pieces feel on your body in addition to how they look and how stylish they are. Don’t buy an itchy sweater just because it’s trendy. If you stop settling for uncomfortable clothing and hold out for pieces that are both comfortable and stylish, you’ll feel better and you’ll still look great.

You should also steer clear of pieces that are almost always uncomfortable and build your outfits around not wearing them. For example, belts accentuate your waist but they are very rarely comfortable. However, wearing high waisted jeans with a crop top has the same waist-cinching effect as a belt without the discomfort. Forgo universally uncomfortable pieces and stock up on ultra-comfy yet trendy styles like rompers, leggings, and athlesisure wear.

2. Take Advantage of Leggings

For all the women out there who want to be comfy all the time but also like to keep up with current trends, the current leggings craze is a lifesaver. Leggings—especially basic black leggings—are a wardrobe staple in virtually every woman’s closet. They are ultra-versatile, and you can pair them with anything from an oversized sweater and tall boots to a crop top and a leather jacket.

Leggings are just about as comfortable as sweatpants, but their skintight fit keeps them from looking sloppy and helps your outfits look put together and trendy. Beyond basic black leggings, there are also countless other legging styles that can add more variety and style to your wardrobe.

3. Give Up on Heels

Heels are one of the most uncomfortable things you can wear. No matter how much gel padding you stuff into the back and sole of your heels, they are never going to be comfortable. If you really want to perfect comfy-trendy style, it’s time to give up on heels altogether and start exploring other less painful trendy shoe options.

There are plenty of stylish shoes that have their soles planted firmly on the ground. Flat ankle booties, tall boots with a chunky sole, and strappy sandals are all comfortable, trendy shoe styles that are not elevated. Even some athletic shoes are considered trendy if you style them right.
