Medigap Plans in Texas: A Basic Guide on Medigap Plans

Jan 8th 2019 at 5:17 AM

On average, Original Medicare covers only about half of the healthcare expenses. Almost every medical beneficiary who enrolled in the Original Medicare in Texas buys additional Medigap plans in Texas to fill the gaps in Original Medicare coverage.

So what is included in Medigap plans, what are different types of Medigap plans, and how to enroll in a Medigap plan? Today we will find out answers to these key questions.

What is included in a Medigap plan?

Purpose of the Medigap plan is to fill the gaps of Original Medicare which pays for many of your healthcare services and supplies, but not for everything. You can also say that Original Medicare is incomplete without an additional Medicare supplement plans or Medigap plans in Texas.

Medigap plans include the following benefits:

•  Medicare Part A copayments and deductible

•  Medicare Part B copayments and deductibles

•  Hospital costs and medical costs that Original Medicare does not include such as skilled nursing facility, emergency overseas travel coverage, and part B excess charges.

However, Medigap plan is extra health insurance. It cannot be used in place of Original Medicare. For part A and Part B health coverage, you have to enroll in Original Medicare. Medigap plans also do not provide Medicare Prescription Drug (Part D) coverage. If you want to avail Part D coverage, you have to enroll in a stand-alone Part D Plan. Also, if you travel outside the U.S. Medigap policies, it does not cover dental, vision, hearing, and long-term care.

What are the different types of Medigap plans?

Currently, there are ten standardized Medigap plans, each represented by a letter (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N) and offers a different level of coverage.

Benefits of each standard category of the Medigap plan remains the same, no matter from which insurance company you have bought a plan. But prices may vary from company to company for the same category of Medigap plan. Plans E, H, I and J are not available for new users. However, the rest of the Medigap plans are available in most states.

How to apply for Medigap plans?

To buy a Medigap plan, you must have enrolled in Original Medicare. Medicare beneficiaries who are receiving Medicare benefits through Medicare Advantage plans cannot buy Medigap policies. It is illegal to sell a Medigap policy to a medical beneficiary who has enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. Therefore, you can buy Medigap plans in Texas from your private insurance company only if you have Original Medicare.

If you want to sign up for Medicare supplement insurance plan, the best time to enroll is during your six months open enrollment period that is six months from the first day of the month of your 65th birthday or within six months of signing up for Medicare Part B.

So this was a brief introduction to Medigap plans. If you want to know more about Medigap plans in Texas, you can contact private insurance companies in your area.
