What is Central Armed Police Force? What are the eligibility criteria and roles and responsibilities?

The Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) refers to the uniform nomenclature of seven security forces of India under the authority of the Ministry of Home Affairs. These are Assam Rifles (AR), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), National Security Guard (NSG), Border Security Force (BSF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

Recruitment is conducted in Three Modes

  • Gazetted Officers – Officers are recruited with the Central Armed Police Forces (Assistant Commandants) examination which is conducted by UPSC.


  • Constables – Constables are recruited by a competitive exam conducted by SSC (Staff Selection Commission).


  • Subordinate Officers – these are also recruited by the SSC exam and they are referred to as DASOs (Directly Appointed Subordinate Officers).

CAPF AC’s 2020 Notification

The exam date for CAPF AC will be released by the UPSC and this year, there are 398 total vacancies for AC’s (Assistant Commandants) in Central Armed Police Forces. All the candidates who want to apply online for CAPF AC’s recruitment 2020 will have to check the details available on the website and the notification released by the official website.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Nationality – no person who is not an Indian Citizen will not be appointed or employed under these rules.


  1. Gender – Both males and females are eligible for the post of Assistant Commandants.


  1. Education Qualification – Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree from a government university. Those candidates, who have appeared in the qualifying exam and yet not got their results are eligible for the CAPF exam. The admission would be provisional until the candidate gives the proof of passing the examination after qualifying the entrance test of Central Armed Police Forces.


  1. Age Limit – The minimum age required is 20 years and the upper age limit of the candidate must be 25 years. The upper age limit of 5 years can be relaxed belonging to SC/ST category. There are different medical standards made by UPSC to apply for a particular post through UPSC CAPF 2020. The candidates who have been selected based on the CAPF exam cannot apply for the exam.

Roles and Responsibilities

Assistant Commandant (AC) leads a company of more than 150 armed persons, who are deployed for conducting the elections and maintaining normalcy, apart from the original mandates of border guarding and the ones who are guarding the industrial corridors (CISF). CRPF is directly involved in law and order maintenance and assisting the local administration and in maintaining the local order.

They have to perform various functions such as planning and conduct of operations, ensuring job training to keep the company constant in any situation, ensuring efficacy and serviceability of armaments in the company.
