Sweeva - is the reward worth the hassles?
When I first joined Sweeva, the idea of being able to comment on sites and get your own commented on was really quite attractive.
However, the way it is going at the moment is clearly beginning to drive people away.
Commenting on sites is being replaced by oflfensive personal comments about the site owner and in some cases these comments are being taken outside of the site chat and made on the profile instead. The ability to comment privately is being grossly abused.
I have been a pacifist all my life. I took an active part in anti-Vietnam demos in my teens and 20's and in later life have turned to the pen/word processor to make my feelings known to politicians and others who promote and condone war.
So when some specific businesses started to use images of war and killing in their advertising, it struck a raw nerve and I voiced my opinion. The reaction was extreme to say the least. I deleted the nasty and spiteful comments, but then found that my sites were being trashed in chat with no justification other than revenge.
I don't do scams - no way. If I think a site is a scam, I will take a look at it, maybe sign up if it is free just to take a look and then unsubscribe when I've made up my mind. Clearly some people on Sweeva can't even do elementary school maths to work out whether a program can sustain what it is offering to pay out. Some programs deliberately mislead, offering some scuzzy e-book as a 'product' to get around what would otherwise be a pure Ponzi scheme.
There isn't as much virus and malware checking of sites on Sweeva as other traffic exchanges do, and I've encountered viruses. attempts to download malicious software and even attempts to change my home page. As an IT professional for over 20 years, my own PC security is high level. I would rather have to make an exception to view a genuine site than get caught with a virus attack.
And what happens when I report a problem like this in chat? I'm told I'm lying or that I'm some dumb bunny and I don't know what I'm talking about and more personal abuse. So be it I tell them. Ignore me. Don't update your anti-virus or don't bother to run it at all, it's you who will lose the contents of your hard drive someday soon.
I have a few pet hates, I admit. One is banner farms. I'm not talking about the very attractive Banners and Bucks splash pages, but whole blog or website pages with banners and text links to payment proofs, yards and yards of it that no-one is going to scroll down to look at.
I've tried explaining politely that this kind of advertising is not effective, but it isn't taken kindly. And I don't like popups (particularly exit pop-ups) and loud videos that autostart and/or have no 'off' button.
Now, you might think that there is NOTHING on Sweeva that I ever had a good word for. I do, but you have to remember that it's a reflection of IM in general and if you don't realise that it is a dangerous place with a lot of dishonesty, then it isn't for you.
One of the guys who has been really nasty and personally offensive is a good designer and does some attractive splash pages for other people. I just don't always like his choice of subjects.
I've been told two different things about the attitude of Sweeva admin to the abuse problem. One is that they just don't care and are happy to let a few bullies and scammers spoil the show. Another is that they are afraid to say anything because the perpetrators spend so much time on Sweeva, are upgraded, lots of referrals etc. And another is that they recognise that it is driving people away and are actively considering ways to stop it.
Perhaps the 'private profile post' was one way to try to stop it, if so, sorry guys, it is making life worse, because there is no automatic way of banning someone from posting on your profile, or if there is I haven't found it.
To the people who just make throwaway comments like 'nice' or 'OK', please be more constructive in what you say. PLEASE don't write something and cut and paste to every site. PLEASE don't beg for stars, it's a big no-no and won't get you many!
I'd like to see Sweeva admin emailing everyone and re-stating the aims of Sweeva as they see it, reminding everyone that you don't get personal, and that you have to be prepared to take honest and constructive criticism - like saying that colours don't work very well, or font needs to be bigger and also to warn that a program doesn't look like it can fulfil what it says on the page. I think that is what was intended and Sweeva needs to get back on track - otherwise I really have to consider if the time I spend there each day is well spent.
