Resignations Of CBFC Shock Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi
The Congress continued to attack the government in the last weeks over the multiple resignations from Censor Board. The party said that Arun Jaitley, minister of Information and Broadcasting cannot hide maladministration, corruption, and inefficiency in his ministry by using good sentences.
Abhishek Singhvi, Congress spokesperson, rejected also the statement of Jaitley about the case. The minister stated that the members who quit are rebels lacking a cause and called the former chief of the board who resigned a nun-functional chairperson.
According to Abhishek Manu Singhvi, the good sentences used by the minister are misapplied in this case. He said that the ten members who resigned are highly respected in their areas including the chairman. If they all quit, it is a proof that there is serious inefficiency, corruption, and maladministration. He added that the minister and government should look into the matter, show concern and care instead of using good sentences or indulging in criticism and rejection.
The remarks of Abhishek Singhvi came the day that followed the resignation of nine members from the Censor Board in demonstration against the dismissive and cavalier manner used by the government to treat them.
Before that, Mr. Samson, who chaired the constitutional body beneath the ministry of Information and Broadcasting quit amid the ruckus on the authorization for broadcasting to contentious movie ‘Messenger of God’, performing Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh who is the chief of the controversial sect Dera Sacha Sauda.
The nine members including T G Thyagarajan, Shubgra Gupta, Shaji Karum, Sekharbabu Kancherla, Rajeev Masand, Pankaj Sharma, Lora Prabhu, Ira Bhaskar, and Arundhati Nagsubmitted a letter stating that they were quitting from the Censor Board.
In his reply, the minister Jaitley accused the nine members and their chairman Samson who quitted also of politicizing the matter of their resignation. He added that the NDA government keeps a length distance of arm in all issues connected to film certification.
The Sikh groups rejected the movie claiming that Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was depicting himself as Sikh Guru and God. Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that there should be a complete investigation into the issue. He claimed that the government should not consider the issue as minor and the resignation by the members of the censor board was a grave matter.
The minister of Information and Broadcasting said that appropriate process was being followed in all issues encompassing the one of ‘Messenger of God’ and added that the government had a deep respect for the members of the censor board. He revealed that when the matter of the previous movie came up, the ministry respected the decision of the board.
The members who resigned claimed that when they watched the entire movie ‘Messenger of God’ they decided that it was not appropriate for public viewing and submitted the matter to thecourt. The tribunal should treat the matter within 15 to 30 days as required but the movie received a clearance within 24 hours. In addition, the chairman of the board, Samson, claimed that the board did not receive fund from the government for holding its meetings as scheduled and there were many interferences.
