Lord Muruga took the form of six babies in Saravana Poigai, a lake, and was looked after by six Krittika stars. On that day, goddess Parvathy united all six forms of Skantda. So Lord Karthikeya has six faces and is popularly known in the Tamil culture as Aarumugan.

Lord Shiva took the form of a flame on Thiruvannamalai Hill. When the light on the top of the Tiruvannamalai hill on Kartigai Deepam is revealed, people worship it. According to another legend, Lord Muruga was first incarnated as six infants in Saravana Poigai that day.

It is believed that the Devas tried their best to have a full darshan from Lord Shiva, and Lord Brahma took the form of a swan, and Lord Vishnu, the shape of a boar, did an extensive search in the sky and noneof the two world hybrids find him. Lord Shiva asked Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu to determine the position of his head and feet when he took on a gigantic shape. When they could not find them, Lord Shiva took the form of a jyothi (flame) on Thiruvannamalai Hill, the ends of which could not be defined. When the light on the top of Tiruvannamalai Hill is revealed on Kartigai Deepam Day, people see the great light and worship it.
