How to approach local SEO

Dec 24th 2015 at 11:03 AM

Although man SEO gurus say that Local SEO can be handled in exactly the same way as regular ol' SEO, this couldn't be further from the truth. Many rules that apply in regular SEO can be essentially tossed out the window when it comes to Local SEO, often to the surprise of people taking on local search engine optimization for the first time. We've outlined some of the craziest tips for local SEO that we could find, and we've outlined them below:

Ask anybody even vaguely familiar with the world of SEO, and they'll tell you that the only thing no-follow links are good for is diversifying your link profile. But when it comes to Local SEO, no-follow links can be just as powerful as do-follow links. I've seen sites shoot up the rankings from just from no-follow links only, as long as they're quality and relevant. Which brings me to my next point....

Niche relevancy vs location relevancy

When we talk about relevancy in SEO, we are talking about building links on sites that are relevant to the content on your own site. But whereas in normal SEO a carpet shop would be quite happy to build links on sites and pages that only target carpets, Local SEO requires links on pages that are not just relevant to the product that you produce (e.g carpets), but also the location that you serve. In fact, in my experience location relevant links are far more powerful than niche relevant links, and this SEO company from Fife ranks for a whole bunch of SEO terms based on location relevant links.

In the world of normal SEO, backlinks from directories would be considered slightly spammy. But in Local SEO, directories are one of the best types of links that you can get. This is because it is very normal for businesses to have several listings in a variety of directories.

So there are a few key points to consider when approaching local SEO, and as you can see it differs from normal SEO in many ways. So when approaching local SEO, be sure to take these differences into consideration.
