Mistakes That Every Graphic Designer is Guilty of Making!

Sep 21st 2016 at 2:39 AM

Has it ever happened to you that you look back and think “Why did I ever do that?” and most importantly why did I ever think it was cool to do any of that but it’s what they say, you mature with time. We all have those skeletons in our closets, it’s alright, though, the best part about mistakes is that everyone makes them and graphic designers are no exception. Every graphic designer has a project that he wants to slide under the rug, yes I am talking about the projects that they don’t even include in their portfolios and hide away but it’s inevitable as every designer will make at least one of the following mistakes in their lives at some point.

1 – Typography:

Typography is an undeniably important aspect of any design project. Typography choices have the tendency to make or break any project. If your typography is not readable, has too many fonts, or it is not consistent with the tone of the either project then it’s safe to say that your project is doomed from the very start.

2 – Proofreading:

Turning in a final project that isn’t proofread might cost you a client. Typos are a complete no-no and while running your project through a spellchecker will rid it of any spelling mistakes, we still urge all the graphic designers to proofread them carefully as the spell checker won't catch any correctly spelled words in the wrong context.

3 – Stock Images:

No doubt, stock images are very helpful for any graphic designer, however, there are some photographs that are popular and you see them everywhere. Our suggestion is to not make the stock model images the focus of your project because if anybody else is using that photo, its takes all your originality off the table.

4 – Saving Your Files:

It is important to know how to set up your files correctly.  Choosing the correct color formats and file formats is very important. It is also important to take certain factors into consideration when you are sending your files to print like bleed, trim, outlining of fonts and color profiles.

5 –Understanding the Brief:

If you don’t truly understand what you are supposed to do, will you ever be able to get it right? Absolutely not. The same goes for design projects too. Not reading and completely understanding the brief will only create more problems for you in the future. Your designs will get rejected, you will be asked repeatedly to revise them and all that only doubles your workload. So pay close attention to the design brief, keep in touch with the client every step of the way so that you know your project is heading in the right direction.

Nobody likes to admit their mistakes and neither do graphic designers but that doesn’t mean they have not made mistakes along the way. When you start out in the field, you get to know so many things that you shouldn’t do that you actually thought were cool and wanted to incorporate into each and every design. However as long as you learned from your mistake, it was worth making.
