Make Your Website's Layout Pop with These Photoshop Tips
Building and maintaining a website can be a stressful gig that doesn't provide much in terms of short-term benefit. Each year, countless people take the plunge by building their own websites, in the hopes that the world wide web will like what they have to offer. All too many times, websites fail not because the content or message was off, but because of the design lacking proper elements, or because SEO was not properly configured. Graphic design is a huge part of a website's aesthetic appeal and can certainly make a difference when it comes to conversions, bounce rates and more. In the following article, we'll discuss some basic tips you can use in Adobe Photoshop to get the most out of any graphic design ambitions you have for your website.
Make Your Colours Pop
There is nothing that's more of a let-down than a photo or custom image being dull or drab. In the age of digital photography and graphic design, you can quickly add blotches of colour to just about anything. Photoshop offers several options to allow you to do just that. Two of these options are Saturation and Vibrance, and each has their own advantages. Vibrance allows you to add more saturation to colours that may by default be less saturated. It also helps you avoid middle-of-the-spectrum saturation with respect to yellow and orange. Saturation, on the other hand, will increase the color intensity of all colors in a given image. Both of these options are available by going to “Image > Adjustments”. There are also a variety of other colour adjustments that can be made from within Photoshop to help get more oomph out of your images.
Resizing images, artifacts left over from compressor components in size-saving software utilities and other alterations of images can leave them somewhat flawed or lacking by the time you stumble across them. A bit of sharpness added here or some brightness added there can make a world of difference. There are several ways to add details and sharpness to any photo, but we'll talk about the best way in which to do it to get the most effect. By simply going to “Filter > Lens Correction”, you'll be able to edit any layer with a high pass filter. Apply the appropriate value and change the blending mode until you get the results you desire. You can then adjust the opacity of an image before saving/exporting. With your image complete, you can then run it through compression software to restore any previous advantage with respect to file size (learn more about the general process of compression by clicking here).
Catch People's Attention
Another trick that you can apply to images in Photoshop is known as vignetting, which adds a darkened border around the edges of an image that fade slowly into the center of the image. This focuses the attention and the eyes of the viewer onto what's going on in the middle of the picture. You can easily add vignettes to any images by going to “Image > Adjustments > Vibrance”, and then selecting the “Custom” menu. Here, you can slide the Vignette bar to and fro to lighten and darken the edges of the pictures. Vignetting is a quick way to add class and focus to any photo that is a part of your website's layout or content.
