Informational Interviews – A Great Networking Tool
Personal networks have always been an essential component of the career management. It is something we have to work on a permanent basis, whether you are in need to look for work or trying to establish your own firm. Personal network always proves to be great as it allow you to learn more about careers, industries and companies that may have interest in hiring and you can get to talk to people who can help you in your job search and let you know better opportunities. An informational interview is effective to inn this regard.
Informational interviews constitute one of the most effective ways to get information about a company, an industry, profession, to receive advice on how to get a new job and also let others know about you.
1 – Arrangement
Arrange interview with people in your network of contacts that may interest you by telephone or e-mail. Call when you think the person may be quieter, possibly afternoons which are better than mornings. Better not call on the mobile unless you indicate otherwise as it may be considered an interruption. Introduce yourself briefly and mention the relationship that you have, summarize your qualifications and say clearly what you want to try. Request a meeting of 15-30 minutes at a time which you find it more comfortable for the other person.

A professional may be interested in talking to you to advise you about his/her industry or business, encourage you towards his/her profession, talk about the potential talents or just share some random or relevant information.

You need to make research about the company and the industry on the whole and prepare the list of questions to ask your partner.

The purpose of informational interviews is to get the latest and authentic information such as the working environment in the industry, company’s culture, the future of the sector, the someone who fits with your profile and interests, career type, the merits and demerits of working in the particular business or sector, the conditions required by the candidates when the selection is made, the anticipation of the future vacancies, names of other contact persons, a review of your career so far and the next logical step.
5 – Thanking
Send a short email to thank you within next 24 to 28 hours after the meeting to keep your relations strengthened.
Switching and finding a new and better job becomes much easier with a big and reliable contact network. It is recommended to have a strong network if you are fond of getting new jobs every now and then.
