Choosing the right image format for Ad pages

Oct 13th 2011 at 4:28 PM

Choosing images for Webpages, Splash Pages and Ads

The most common image format, the main problem with a .jpg image,
it tends to smear text and lines.

This format has limited color information attached to it.
It is not a good choice for photographs. Gifs are limited to 256 colors
and cannot display gradient images with good quality.
The big advantage with .gif images, they allow for animation.

The .png is a newer format, it is versatile and royalty free.
Browser image support is very good.
For the widest possible browser support use .png images
with no alpha channel transparency.
Internet Explorer versions before version 7 do not correctly
display images with alpha channel transparency.
A .png image displays true color (16 million colors).
This is a great quality image, however it does use a
lot more kilo bytes.

And .png does not do a good job supporting animation yet,
browser support is poor for supporting animation.
