Best E-Commerce Platforms for Your Business

Oct 9th 2015 at 1:10 AM

E-Commerce has been one of the most lucrative businesses in the last few years. Before we start listing platforms and websites that implemented them successfully, let’s take a look on several self-explanatory stats that concern the continuous grow of e-commerce:

  • Average American e-commerce consumers will spend $1,804 in 2015.

  • Worldwide B2C (business to consumer) e-commerce sales amounted $1,2 trillion in 2013

  • More than 40% of worldwide internet users (at least once) shopped online

Bottom line is that with the rising number of internet users, people will shift even more towards internet shopping, because from customer’s point of view it provides only benefits. But in this article we are more interested in what entrepreneurs think about this business, so these are some of the advantages and disadvantages of e-commerce:

  • The shop is open 24/7

  • E-Commerce expands business by overcoming geographical limitations

  • It requires much less personnel and drastically cuts costs.

  • Customer’s (usually) don’t get to try the product before the purchase

  • Well, that’s about it!

One of the best things about e-commerce is that it enables small entrepreneurs to compete with big retail chains, with their intuitive software solutions and great web design. That’s why one of the most essential requirements for starting this kind of business is a good e-commerce platform. In this article we are going to list some of the best platforms.

All e-commerce platforms can be separated in two big groups: hosted and self-hosted ones. Hosted platforms are the ones that are run by a company or an agency that is giving you the space in which you can run your store. Self-hosted platforms on the other hand are the ones that are hosted by the users. When it comes to these platforms, it’s always advisable to hire some freelancer or digital agency for running it, if the your company doesn’t have employees that are skillful enough for this task. These are some of the most popular platforms from both categories:

Hosted Platforms

  • Shopify- This highly popular platform is superb when it comes to design, and user interface. Another great thing is the ability to add more apps and plugins that make platform more functional. Only bad thing about Shopify is the check-out page that’s really difficult to change and customize for company’s needs, but if you want a platform with easy customizable check-out-page, you should go directly to self-hosted list. When it comes to fees, it definitely isn’t the most affordable on the market. Companies need to pay $29 a month, plus additional 2,9%+30 cents for using card processor.

  • Volusion- This platform is much less customizable than Shopify, but other than that it functions in a very similar way. Good thing about it is the price that is almost 50% less expensive than Shopify and it can be purchased for as low as $15 a month.

  • BigCommerce- It costs as much as Shopify, but it isn’t as functional and customizable. There are some great features BigCommerce comes with, like the ability to implement Google Trusted Stores or Product Feed. It is much better than Volusion, but its price is as high as $29,99 a month, plus 1,5% of card processing fees.

Self-Hosted Platforms

  • Magneto- Magneto is one of the oldest platforms on the market and you can read a lot of both good and bad reviews about it. Unlike some other self-hosted platforms it is not that customizable and it sometimes works slow and non-responsive, although it also has a lot of pros like the number of different features that it comes with.

  • WooCommerce- This is a simple Wordpress plugin and therefore is much less expensive than all the other platforms, plus for that money users get an ultimate customizability and a great use of actions, filters and hooks. It also enables users to post their blogs on the same website which is great for content marketing. Basically this platform offers you everything that comes with Wordpress, including millions of themes and plugins.

Whatever platform you choose, you need to be aware of the fact that from the moment you put the shop online, it needs to service each and every customer in a timely manner. There are plenty of forums and e-commerce review websites, so you can’t risk getting a negative review. With the huge rise of e-commerce popularity among entrepreneurs, getting a bad name is not an option.
