The Park consists of 300.040 hectares of the land for the natural habitat of the wild animals in the Tanjung Puting National Park. The main purpose of developing the park is for giving the protection to the orangutans during the year 1936-37. Then later it was upgraded as the National park in the year 1982. This is the only protected area in the South East Asia for giving the protection of the endangered species living in the world. The Camp Leakey in the Park was developed in the year 1971 by the Louis Leakey. In the memory of the Louis Leakey, it is named as the Camp Leakey. It can be act as a rehabilitation center for the orangutans and the several animals of the Park. The Camp Leakey provides the best nature to the researches for doing the research about the lives and environment of the orangutans. The tourists are permitted to visit the Park, but they have to be staying away from the research works of the scientists and the students. On the river beds near to the Camp Leakey, you can occasionally see the reptiles and the crocodiles for the surviving in the river. The some other animal resources rather than the orangutans in the Park are Proboscis monkeys, long tail monkeys, horn bills, myna, and the large monkey.
