Precautions Bikers Should Take While Going on a Tour in winters

Dec 28th 2015 at 11:46 PM

A bike trip in winter can be a rather pleasing experience. However, what you have to keep in mind is that in winter, the odds are stacked against you. That’s why you have to keep in mind the following tips before you embark on your bike tour out in the freeze:

A. Wear several layers

It’s important to protect yourself against the cold, but simply piling on a heavy jacket may not be enough. Instead, opt for several layers of light, breathable clothing to keep yourself well insulated. Of course, do not forget the legs and your feet. Apply the same principle as for the upper body, and also grab a nice pair of woollen socks. For your face, get a good pair of goggles and a scarf to keep yourself free of wind burn.

B. Use the correct engine oil

Due to low ambient temperatures, your bike’s engine needs the correct grade of engine oil to function within the optimal range. Consult the owner’s manual or ask your mechanic what grade of engine oil to use. You certainly don’t want to get stranded in the middle of your bike trip because your engine decided to not even start up.

C. Watch your tire pressure

The colder it gets outside, the lower your tire pressure will be. This is because the cold air constricts the air inside the tires. However, you must check for adequate tire pressure before starting every ride, because without adequate pressure in the tires you will not have optimal traction, which in winters (with the slick roads) will be extremely important. Also, check for the depth of tread left in the tyres, because more than in any other season, in winters, your tires will need to work away water (from melted ice) while you’re riding.

D. Drive slower

This goes almost without saying, as in winter visibility is reduced due to foggy conditions. Maintain good distance between the automobile you’re following, and make sure that your lights (front and back) are working properly.

E. Have a towing service in handy

Accidents may happen at any time, and more so in the winters when the roads are a lot more unpredictable. It’s important therefore to have the contact details of a towing service available, and it’s even better if it offers the facility to tow motorcycles.

F.  If it starts to snow, head home.

Therefore keep the above pointers in mind for your bike trip. For information on India’s best trails, food joints and hotels, download the Trails of India app from the Google Play Store.
