Fortress Nehaj was established in 1558 when the Turks and Venice were the most powerful. Back then, Senj was fighting several times against the enemy in order to protect the city and not let the enemy to seize control over the city.

The captain of the Senj Uskoks, Ivan Lenkovic ordered a new fortress to be built and all the other churches outside the borders to be destroyed. Nehaj Fortress was 18 m high and 23 m wide. The powerful walls 3,30 m thick narrowing towards the top ended with crenel and five small corner towers. Today, the fortress is a museum where you can feel the history; exhibitions of weapons, clothing, drawings. You can see the remains of small Romanesque church of St. Juraj inside the fortress, a big collection of weapons and costumes that belonged to Uskoks, displays of household items from that period. Also, there is an annual great event organized there, medieval festival, where the most important part is when the "Uskoks" march up to the fortress on horseback. In the Nehaj Fortress you can find detailed overview of its history and visit crafting workshops and many other themed attractions.
