Naadam Festival – The Best Event To Be Planned For Mongolia Tourism

Mongolia has been a nation with great history and heritage. This is the country where the last nomadic tribe of the world still resides in its original form. Surrounded by Russia, China and this is a republic land and has vivid tourism significance. Mongolia is also known as the land of eternal blue sky having more than 250 sunny days in a year. There are many festivals in Mongolia that displays its traditions and culture. Naadam Festival as the national festival of this country marks a true significant and makes a distinct point in the itinerary of Mongolia travel.

Naadam Festival:

Registered in the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, UNESCO since 2010, Naadam Festival is a sure attraction of Mongolia Tourism. As per the people of Mongolia, this festival is known as the festival of “Three Games of Men”. This celebration happens during the National Holidays in Mongolia during July 11-13 each year in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. The Naadam festival is being celebrated as an annual event since hundreds of years in some form or the other.

Major Attractions:

As the name in Mongolian says this is the festival of “Three Games of Men”, this national event has three major games. The celebration starts with traditional songs and dance, which is one of the most fascinating events for the travelers on Mongolia tours. The three major games are:

  • Wrestling: The Naadam festival wrestling is still an ‘only-male’ game today with its traditional form. The wrestlers are given options to choose their opponents to wrestle among. Tourists, who travel Mongolia, get fascinated by the colorful costumes of these wrestlers and enjoy profusely. Tourism in Mongolia also gets quite a unique quotient with this wrestling event.
  • Horse racing: Unlike western horse racing events, where riders sprint for a shorter distance (around 2 kms), the Mongolian horse racing stretches across terrains and are usually much longer (15-30 kms). Mongolian horses are known as one of the best breeds in the world. Both male and female riders jockey these horse and are usually chosen from age-group of 7-15 years. Horses of 2-3 years run for a stretch of 10 miles and that stretches to around 17 miles for horses of 7-8 year. Various agencies offering tour Mongolia, specifically organize some tours to cover this traditional horse racing.
  • Archery: Another traditional celebration with traditional attire, archery event is now allowing both male and female archers to participate. All competitors are allowed 4 arrows with which they need to pierce the target known as ‘surs’. There are 33 surs are placed at a distance of 75 meters (for male event) and 65 meters (for female event) respectively. The archers have to shoot down most number of surs through their arrow.

Travel in Mongolia is considered incomplete without watching the Naadam Festival. Special arrangements have been done in the capital Ulaanbaatar for foreign tourists by Mongolia Tourism. As the festival is held during the summer months, there is much more inflow is observed among tourists, who travel to Mongolia during this time. Being an event of great historical significance, Mongolia holidays truly cannot be completed without this much sought after Naadam Festival in Mongolia.
