The beginning of the squid season begins in April and finish around January next year. Early season, the squid are often smaller but as the season goes on, the squids get bigger and bigger. The highest peak of the squid fishing season usually starts from August to December and if you want to catch the biggest squids, you’d better wait until October and November.

There is a tendency that there are many squids around rocks and seaweeds. You will often be able to tell if squid have been caught recently by the squid-ink stains on the deck. Remember, night time tends to be more productive.

As the night falls, fishing gears like fishing rods and racquets will be provided to each of the guests who want to take part in this activity. Normally, during the squid season, it would be common to see large squids hovering around the cruises and some lucky guests may catch 15-20 squids per night. For newcomers, here are some squid fishing techniques:

  • Fish at night
  • Fish on calm water
  • Select a location where a strong light shines into the water
  • Best water depth is 4-12m (7m is ideal)
  • Use quality jigs and keep them moving at all times
  • Set the hook when you feel the slightest pull on your line

If you want to keep the squids alive, they are best used immediately or kept in a big tank, they don’t last long in a bucket. Or the cruise’s chef will use the squids for an on board meal for you and your family.

Moreover, this is also an ideal time to enjoy the spectacular beauty of Halong bay by night. At the end of the day, eating boiled squid fish, drinking wine and singing karaoke are the best way to mark an unforgettable night in the UNESCO World Heritage – Halong Bay, Vietnam.
