St Nicholas Abbey

Set in the parish of St. Peter, St. Nicholas Abbey is one of the few Jacobean mansions in the Western Hemisphere and a former sugarcane plantation, dating back to 1660. It’s home to museum spaces with ancient antiques and artefacts, an old boiling house, a rum distillery which produces the St. Nicholas Abbey Rum and beautiful surrounding gardens. You can choose to experience a complimentary guided tour of this heritage house which allows an informative insight into the colonial history of St. Nicholas Abbey.

George Washington House & Museum

The George Washington House & Museum, formerly known as Bush Hill House is the former residence of the famous American political leader young George Washington and his half-brother; it was the only house Washington lived in outside of the continental US. This historic plantation house allows an insight into daily life in Barbados some centuries ago; here you can explore original furnishings, 18th century homewares and other historic artefacts that provide a powerful reminder of the slave history in Barbados.

Gun Hill Signal Station

The hill top Gun Hill Signal Station dates back to the early 18th century when it was first built by the British as a signal station to spot the approach of enemies and provide internal security to Barbados. The Gun Hill Signal Station has since been restored by the Barbados National Trust with a superb collection of military memorabilia, and at the foot of the site is an impressive lion statue that was carved from a single piece of rock in 1868.

National Heroes Gallery & Museum of Parliament

This excellent cultural centre is dedicated to the history of Barbados from the early 16th century until present. The National Heroes Gallery is home to a series of top-class exhibits, audio and video content, interactive screenings and sculptures created by leading Caribbean and Barbadian artists and the Museum of Parliament is located in the Neo-Gothic style Parliament buildings, which are a work of art itself, built with coral limestone in the 1870s.

Barbados Museum & Historical Society

The Barbados Museum & Historical Society is set at the island’s UNESCO World Heritage Property and is home to a selection of galleries set in old military prison structures, allowing a really interesting historical insight. The Shilstone Memorial Library is a highlight of this attraction which displays old documents, photographs and rare books.
