Choosing the Best Air Rifle for Hunting

Oct 1st 2015 at 9:02 AM

As we well know air rifles are considered best when it comes to small game hunting and pest control. Even in target shooting practices these are used by hundreds. The Benjamin "Trail Nitro Piston 2" Air Rifle and Crosman Benjamin "Discovery .22" Air Rifle are two best hunting rifle contenders when it comes to user reviews and voting. So what would be the perfect one for use by you? Here we consider few features according to which the rifles will be rated. These features are the basic data that can help in determining which type of rifles suits your needs.

Benjamin "Trail Nitro Piston 2" Air Rifle:

Caliber: This is a .22 caliber rifle compatible with .22 caliber pellets.

Power: Maximum FPS attained by pellets in test conditions is 1200 fps.

Scope: It comes with a 3x to 9x magnification capable 32 mm stock scope which is plenty useful for beginners. For professionals, one can change the scope and move on to a more powerful one. The scope has good image resolution and perfect for small game hunting.

Fuel system: Powered by "Trail Nitro piston 2" technology.

Other features: This air rifle, with the inclusion of nitro piston technology, has reduced cocking force need and also "noise suppression" is greatly increased. This is not completely silent though but sounds are not loud enough to make wake up the neighborhood. The trigger is made of metal parts while the trigger guard supplied is of plastic make. The trigger breaks clean and do not pose frequent locking issues like most air rifles. Also, the trigger safety system is made of metal alloy. The overall body weight is acceptable. The anti-recoil feature mentioned may work, but the gun still has a little bit of recoil to correct.

Crosman Benjamin "Discovery .22" Air Rifle:

Caliber: This is a .22 caliber rifle compatible with .22 caliber pellets.

Power: Can shoot at 900 feet per second at maximum.

Scope: This does not come with stock scope but one can add it via addition of mount and compatible rails on the gun.

Fuel system: Powered by "2000psi" air / co2 dual fuel system. CO2 when used as fuel produces more FPS than air system.

Other Features: This is a fueled system which uses CO2 or air pumps to keep a 2000PSI pressure. It is not hard to pump but a better alternative will be to keep the pressure full and not to let it drop below 1000PSI. This rifle is a little bit lighter than the nitro piston. The sound it makes can be considered loud. Also, recoil is not at all a problem. It has almost zero recoil when shot. This gives it a huge advantage over the nitro piston 2.

Both of these guns have excellent specifications when it comes to performance. But still, some things like loud noise, low recoil also matters for some hunters. This is not a difference, but a side by side evaluation of the two of the most sought after air rifles. The points of evaluation are something that can matter for a small game hunter or a target shooter. Both rifles come at attractive pricing range. With the hunting rifle comparison made above, one can easily set their preference and choose what suits him or her.
