4 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT TOMS RIVER
Fact #1 - Alot fo the Amityville Horror movies were shot in Toms River. The filming of the outdoor scenes did not take place in Amityville, Long Island, but took place at Toms River, New Jersey. The first three films were filmed at a house in Toms River, New Jersey which had been converted to look like 112 Ocean Avenue after the authorities in Amityville denied permission for location filming. Although not all of the films in The Amityville Horror series are set at the former Lutz home on Ocean Avenue, the distinctive Dutch Colonial house is traditionally used as the main image in promotional material.
Fact #2 - Toms River is home to one of the state’s only at-grade cloverleafs, at the intersection of Hooper Avenue and Route 571(Bay Avenue). Whats a cloverleaf you ask? A cloverleaf interchange is a two-level interchange in which left turns are handled by loop roads. To go left (in right-hand traffic), vehicles first pass either over or under the other road, then turn right onto a one-way three-fourths loop ramp (270°) and merge onto the intersecting road. At-grade cloverleaf configurations with full four leafs and full outside slip ramps are extremely rare. Check it out on Google Maps, here.
Fact #3 - The Annual Toms River Halloween parade is the 2nd largest Halloween parade in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Fact #4 – The Village of Toms River is listed on both the National and State registers of historic places. Yes I said the Village of Toms River,”Toms River” at one time referred only to the village of Toms River, a small part of the vast Township of Dover that included several other distinct settlements.
