Why Use An Oil Cooler For Engines – Is It Safe?

An oil cooler is used in the cooling and proper lubrication of an engine. This is a device that is designed to provide a cooling effect using oil.  It is mostly used in heavy duty machines. It is mostly used in vehicles especially off-road and trucks. There are some specific vehicles that use oil for cooling to provide the right temperatures for engine performance.

Cooling the engine allows it to run smoothly. Engines tend to overheat or sometimes break down when changing gears especially on a hot day.  The way this works is that the heat from the engine is transferred to the oil which passes through the cooler and the now cool oil flows back and cools the engine. An oil cooler is used when water cooling is not sufficient. It provides that extra cooling effect. There are some advantages to using oil as a coolant;

  • One of the benefits of oil is that its boiling temperature is higher than that of water. This means that even at 100 degree or higher, oil can still provide cooling. This is a great advantage for machinery that experiences very high temperatures. Engines that need to get extra cooling can use oil.
  • Corrosion is one of the things to worry about when using water for cooling. There is the risk of the engine getting rust when water is used. With oil however, this is not a problem because oil naturally protects against corrosion.
  • If there are electric components involved, then oil can be used safely. Oil is an insulator for electric currents. This makes it suitable for more applications.
  • When using any type of coolant, there is always the risk of leakages. If that were to happen with the oil, no major damage can be expected. The engine would not suffer damages as it would with water.

These are just some of the advantages that come with oil coolers. One thing to note though is that oil can degrade. This can be very harmful to an engine. When this happens, the lubricant and cooling features are lost. This risk is posed when the oil cannot lose the heat that it has absorbed during the cooling process. One should also remember that oil is flammable. Understanding the benefits and the limitations of oil as a coolant helps use it to its full advantage.

Oil coolers are necessary to keep machinery at optimal performance. Keeping the temperature at optimum allows for better performance. There are some racing cars that can be fitted with oil coolers to allow for better advantage. Keeping the fluids at the right temperature will help get the most out of an engine.
