VSAT technology for secure and faster communication
Very Small Aperture Terminal or in short VSAT is a satellite communication system that works great for both home and business owners. The end user must have a box to interface between an outside antenna with a transceiver and user’s computer. A transceiver is used to send and receive a signal from a satellite transponder in the space. In order to make the entire system, a hub station is also established on the earth. Satellite sends and receives signals from this hub station. Every end user is connected to this hub station via the satellite. In order to facilitate communication among the end users, transmission goes to the hub station, and from there it is transmitted to other users’ VSAT. The technology is quite efficient in handling voice, data and video signals.
VSAT is designed to be used by both residential and corporate users who use big devices like DirecPC and also by private companies busy operating their own VSAT system. These companies also lease their systems. This technology has multiple advantages over other terrestrial units used by users across the world. If the application is private, then companies using VSAT communications have total control over their system. With this technology in hand, they need not to depend on other companies. In addition, as users, they get to enjoy higher speed reception than other ordinary telephone service for communication.
In general, VSAT antennas have dimensions ranging from 30 inches to 48 inches. Data transmission rates typically range from 56 Kbps up to 4 Mbps.
Commonly, this technology is used to transmit:
- Broadband data, which is to ensure satellite internet access for remote locations, video transmission or Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP.
- Narrowband data – this is to ensure point of sale transactions like or supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data, polling or radio-frequency identification data or RFID and credit card.
VSATs are also great for transportable and on-the move communications where phased array antennas are used. This is to facilitate mobile maritime VSAT communications.
An advance application in the field is maritime VSAT that uses satellite communication through the same VSAT antenna, but it is placed on a ship working at sea. However, this technology needs some variation as the ship at sea keeps moving with the water. In order to receive signals properly, the antenna has to be stabilized with reference to the horizon and true north. The antenna should be constantly pointing at the satellite in order to transmit and receive signals as needed.
