VSAT has increasing demand in the maritime environment
VSAT technology is a way to establish two way satellite communications to enjoy internet, telephony and data in far flung areas and harsh environments. Herein, this is particularly for marine environment.
Usually, VSAT solutions in the maritime segment are offered as packaged solutions comprising – satellite space segment, equipment, phone and internet services. For commercial markets, VSAT services have operated at Ku-band and C-band, and by making use of satellites placed at GEO orbital location. The location of the satellites coupled with the movement of the vessels, one needs stabilised antennas and tracking. A stabilised maritime VSAT antenna typically consists of circular antenna with a diameter of 2.4 metres or smaller. The majority of VSAT antennas range from 60cm to 1.5 metres in diameter for Ku-band and 2.4 metres (or even larger) for C-band.
Normally, the data rates range from 64kbps up to 8Mbps, but you can also have lower and much higher data rates. A remote maritime system typically has two parts –
An outdoor unit or an antenna and transceiver placed outdoors. In maritime, this can also be termed as ‘Above Deck Unit or ADU’
An indoor unit is there to react with the outdoor unit and control the antenna. In maritime it is also known as ‘Below Deck Unit – BDU’
