VSAT satellite technology is not generally considered for the primary WAN links in any residential or commercial organization. This technology may sound very old and meant for remote forecasting or broadcasting etc., but this is not the case. A lot is happening in the satellite technology and the home cable network like DTH. In fact, VSAT technology is now competing for home internet broadband and primary corporate connectivity allowing affordable packages as well as faster connectivity.
VSAT or Very Small Aperture Terminals has three vital components: -
1. The satellite
2. A central hub with a big dish antenna
3. A number of smaller nodes to form a star topology using the satellite network
In the technology, all the nodes in the topology communicate with the central hub through the satellite as a medium for communication. If additional networks have to be integrated in this VSAT network, it can be done at the Network Operations Center at the central hub.
Nowadays, Geo-Synchronous satellites are used for WAN or broadband connectivity to provide a permanent coverage over a fixed area. After C and Ku bands, Ka bands are drawing all the concern for its high throughput performance capabilities.
The major strength of satellite technology lies in providing access to the internet in remote locations. A satellite in Geo Synchronous orbit can cover around 33% of the earth’s surface and provide internet access to any area covered by it. Also, it can focus on a particular high density region. Multiple satellites can be launched into the orbit to ensure global coverage. This technology is very helpful to provide internet access to remote areas like ships, coastal regions, hills, rural areas or any other region with poor network connectivity.
VSAT networks are highly advanced and carry data as well as latency sensitive applications such as voice and video. This is why cable TV, internet radio and other technologies are penetrating more into real life applications. Digital Signage Applications like audio and video streaming are also possible with VSAT technology.
Once the satellite is put into the orbit, the deployment at the customer end can be done in hours if equipment and tools are ready. Deployment can be done in any region covered by it with minimum training.
VSAT communications are highly secure and reliable supporting encryption of all data transmitted between two or multiple sites. This is the reason why it finds wide acceptance in corporate and government activities.
