Very Small Aperture Terminal For Seamless Communication
VSAT stands for Very Small Aperture Terminal, which is a tiny fixed earth station. It provides the ultimate communication link needed for setting up a satellite-based communication network. The technology involves the relaying of radio signals to distant locations by the use of a satellite. The communication thus established is a two-way communication with 2-way satellite ground station or a stabilized maritime VSAT antenna which comprises a dish antenna of not more than 3 meters. Generally, the VSAT is used for the transmission of narrowband data as required in credit card transactions, polling or RFID data; or broadband data needed for satellite internet access to remote locations, VoIP or video. Besides, the technology can also be utilized for transportable or mobile maritime communications.
VSAT is made of two units – an outdoor and an indoor unit. The indoor unit works as a modem and interferes with end-user equipment like telephones, personal computers, EPABX or LANs. This unit is composed of modulators to facilitate in superimposing the user traffic signal on a carrier signal, which is then carried forward to the RFT for up-conversion, amplification and transmission. This indoor unit also helps in determining the access schemes to operate the VSAT.
On the other hand, the outdoor unit embodies a Radio Frequency Transceiver (RFT) and an antenna. In general, the antennas are in the range from 1.8 metre to 2.4 metres and data rates ranging from 56 Kbit/s to 4 Mbit/s. VSAT accesses satellites in the geosynchronous orbit for transmitting data from small distant earth stations to other terminals in mesh topology or master earth station hubs in star topology.
This unit is composed of a reflector, mount and a feedhorn. The RFT is composed of many subsystems including low and high powered noise amplifiers and up and down converters, and is fixed on the antenna frame. The feedhorn, also mounted on the antenna frame, allows directing the transmitted power towards the antenna dish and is mainly composed of microwave passive components.
