The basics of Marine engineering

Marine engineering deals with construction and designing of ships. It also deals with the repair of various marine vehicles, ship and boat. A lot of engineering and technology is required to design a marine vessel. It is very important for the effective operations and safety of the ship or marine vessels on the sea. There are constant developments in this field of engineering that involves the designing, maintenance, launching, trials operation and construction. All marine vessels or ship work on Archimedes' principle. According to this principle, the weight of the floating body should be equal to the weight of the volume of the water displaced by the object. The marine engineer however works in much depth of this principle involving angles and equilibrium to design a vessel or ship. A lot of formulas and calculations are done to make the object float with utmost safety and ease.

Naval architecture is about maintaining the dynamic and static balance of a floating vessel. It is therefore necessary to undergo lot of research and calculations before undertaking and ship modification, rebuilding, repair or modernization. By employing the safety regulations and damage control rules, the ships are made to be ready to be sailed in the sea. The marine vessel or ship must float with minimum external force and smoothly through the sea even the rough ones. The ship resistance is also checked upon by the naval engineers. In fact, there is a department in the naval engineering that is responsible for the approval of the design of the ships and checks all statutory and non-statuatory warnings.

Despite the science of fluids and intense study on buoyancy, streamlining, stability and displacement of water one thing always remains unpredictable and that is the fury of nature. The strong cyclones, tsunamis and other environmental calamities makes even the most well structured ships to sink. The naval architects though knowing the full engineering of the vessel specialize in the various sub areas of this huge engineering task. For example, some are experts in design operating features, experts in safety parameters like storm shelters, fire escape and lifeboats and are also responsible for troubleshooting the same.

The ships contained a short vertical structure used for mooring on the ships known as bollard. Nowadays the word has been significantly used for controlling traffic or to direct the ways by using an array of such short posts. At the shore, the power of the water vessel or ship is calculated by the Bollard pull. It is more like the force exerted by the vessel under various test conditions.
