Satellite Broadband – Some Features
Satellite broadband is referred to as the network connectivity provided through low-earth-orbit (LEO) or geostationary satellites. The satellite communication thus established allows users to enjoy much faster data rates. The satellite broadband communication can be established via satellite in two steps:
· A personal computer is used to broadcast requests through satellite modem to a satellite dish placed on roof top of home or a business establishment.
· Signals from the orbiting satellite are sent and received by the dish. If the dish is able to get a clear view of the sky then users can enjoy speedy satellite internet access.
‘Satellite broadband’ and ‘satellite Internet access’ terms are used interchangeably.
Details of satellite broadband
Satellite communication offers a number of features which other technology is not able to provision. However, some technical limitations are also experienced by the users when it comes to exploiting potentials with this technology. The satellites placed in the geostationary orbit can deliver high internet speed not possible with traditional broadband services. Nevertheless, variations in the speed can also be experienced by the users.
This technology also allows users to get some additional features like standard and high-definition TV (HDTV), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), video on demand and datacast.

Satellite communication is greatly affected by the factors like rain, snow and moisture. The lower frequency bands are less vulnerable in comparison with higher frequency bands. Therefore, special considerations should be made for heavy rain regions where satellite broadband has to be used.
Signal latency is a big issues faced with the technology, especially when real time applications are concerned. The distance that a signal from a user’s satellite station has to cover can cause significant delay, which is known as latency. This is actually three times higher than other internet options.
Line of sight
For the effective establishment of satellite broadband communication, a clear view between the dish and the satellite is required. Signals may also be scattered as a result of the presence of trees and other obstructions. Signals are also very sensitive to minor obstructions like tree foliage when the radio frequency is as low as 900 MHz.
However, the technology still offers an excellent way to establish communication on the subsea vessels and remote areas where traditional methods would not work. The biggest advantage of satellite broadband is that it can be quickly established on a mobile device for better internet access.
