Pros and Cons of Wall Fireplaces

Oct 26th 2015 at 12:53 AM

As opposed to traditional fireplaces and chimneys, a growing trend is wall fireplaces. These systems are installed on the wall. They are powered by electricity or natural gas. There are several pros and cons to having a wall fireplace inside your home.

Perhaps the most attractive aspect of wall-mounted fireplaces is the lack of mess. Instead of having to buy fuel or logs, you can start your fire with an on/off switch. This makes your fireplace a sleek piece of décor in the room. It takes up almost no extra space. Some units are portable, so you could even move it from room to room. Wall mounted fireplaces may appeal to those living in small apartments or condos. Installing a wall fireplace requires no remodeling, and is far less expensive than a wood fire or chimney project.

Another positive quality of wall fireplaces is safety. These systems do not produce fumes and do not require a chimney or flue to vent. This means that you will not have to worry about cleaning a chimney or having creosote buildup in the flue. This saves you money and erases the fire hazards of traditional systems. Electric fireplaces will not damage your walls or your health with smoke entering your home.

Wood fireplaces require lots of time and energy to light. On the other hand, wall fireplaces can be instantly lit. You will be curled up in front of the fireplace with a cup of tea in no time. You can also control the temperature to radiate a certain heat level or control simply turn on the flame. Often, fireplaces are more powerful than other space heaters.

Though there are many benefits of wall fireplaces, there are some drawbacks. Some people may feel that they do not replicate the look and feel of a “real” fireplace. Depending on the quality of the manufacturing, wall fireplaces may look cheap. Another con is that electric fireplaces do not give off as much heat as a gas or wood hearth. In these systems, you can add more logs to increase the heat. Also, wall-mounted fireplaces do not give added value to your home. Some home buyers may prefer the presence of a real fireplace in the home.

All in all, there are many great things about installing a wall fireplace in your house. They can add warmth to a modern home and can look quite chic if you find a quality product. Click here to find a fireplace showroom in San Diego.
