Online Activism: Hashtag Your Voice

May 14th 2015 at 9:59 PM

Even as many people justifiably try to move against globalization and how technology and the internet has been able to transform our daily lives especially as it concerns the use of these resources to perpetrate evil doings and some criminal acts, the fact that these developments have positively and greatly enhanced some other aspects of our lives cannot be undermined.

One of such aspects is the communication flow and the ease in passing on messages from one place or person to another. The internet and other related resources have made it very easy to convey messages and reach a good number of audiences effectively.

The internet and its related tools have helped activists and other persons wanting to voice out some form of injustice or displeasure concerning a situation. These guys are referred to as online activists. The trend in online activism has risen over the past decade. The world being a global village means that one can actually speak about an occurrence in one remote village and have millions of people talk about it and make adequate correction either by the government or the appropriate institution.

How many times have you clicked on campaigns relating to the boycott of a product or a petition against a particular act? These are all forms of online activism and such activists employ different techniques to drive home their point and make sure necessary steps are taken to correct the ills.

The beauty of online activism is the seemingly success rate that can be recorded in a relatively short while.  These protests or call that could simply be initiated by a Facebook post or an online petition has the potential of being supported and drawing members from all over the world and in just a matter of days; it could be the only thing the world talks about. This will definitely draw the attention of world leaders and the international organizations which would subsequently result in changes and corrections to the defect.

A typical example is the case of the Hilton hotel’s refusal to sign a code of conduct stating that its staffs be trained to help eradicate abuse in its hotels. Some online activists took to the support of the staffs and in a week, the Hilton group made of promise to sign the code of conduct. This was after over three hundred thousand people signed against the Hilton group.

If such cases are related to the time of Apartheid and other such cases, maybe the world would have been a better place for us all to live. Now there are sites that try to do exactly that. Nterestin,, is a site that tries to do exactly that. With just a click of a button, you can instantly give your cause the attention it needs.
