Mining communications and their importance
In underground mines, effective communication is extremely important from safety as well as productivity standpoint. Proper and reliable communication systems save the machine breakdown time and also aid in immediate transmission of message from the underground working area to the surface for speedy rescue operations in the hours of need. By this way, a reliable communication channels is also important to ensure safety of workers in the underground mines.
This increasing demand for faster and effective communication has made researchers to look for improved technology. Underground communication technology has been lagging behind the surface technology despite making several progresses in this direction. This is basically due to the lack of interest in this field, due to which progresses have been made so slow. The less improved technology for mining communications is also due to unfavourable and hazardous environment.
The existing systems in the underground mines are usually based on wired or line based systems. Hence, the technology is not very reliable as they can’t withstand the hazardous conditions. In addition, with limitations posed by wires, they are not accessible to some areas of the mine. The topology of mine which is non-symmetric, its structure, which is complex, put even more hindrance on the way to line communication. Therefore, wireless technology is more reliable in this field offering a convenient system for outstanding communication solutions. Also, wireless systems can combat disastrous situations and continue to offer transmission of communication with much ease.
Communication is of utmost importance for a mining network
Mine disasters are extremely dangerous as they often leave survivors trapped underground. Rescuers on the surface are restricted to carry out the rescue operations and inhibited in their work due to the lack of necessary information like location and condition of the survivors. In order to mount a timely and effective rescue effort, they must have immediate knowledge of the conditions inside the mine. There has to be some method of location for the mine workers if they get trapped inside the mine. Emergency like fire and poisonous gas is different from the one where workers get trapped but have access to the environment. In gas of poisonous gas leakage, death is faster and the situation is extremely fatal. Only an emergency system of location and communication channel can hurry up the entire process and allow the rescue operations go smoothly.
This is why mining communications have to be impeccable offering reliable operations even when the disaster strikes.
