How the Car Camera is Increasingly Being Used to Great Effect.
A few years ago, if you had said that a car camera would become one of the biggest selling gadgets in the world, I would have replied "oh yeah - who would want one of those?".
Well I would now be eating my words, because the car camera, otherwise known as the dash cam has become so popular with motorists that you can now even pick them up in your local petrol station on the counter.
Why is this?
Well basically people are - on the whole - untrustworthy when it comes to presenting details of what happened in a road accident. Drivers are more concerned with blaming the other party than being honest - which would generally result in them losing a no claims discount on their insurance. To combat this, many drivers (generally the honest ones) have had to resort to fitting cameras in their cars to film the road ahead and in some cases behind, so that in the event of an accident, the other driver has no say in what happened - the camera caught everything so when they lie and attempt to defraud the insurance company, they simply dig themselves a deeper hole and could even be prosecuted for fraud.
This is the perfect situation for the honest driver who can now exact a perfect revenge on the cheating selfish drivers who, in the past, have been literally in some cases getting away with murder.
In the latest news in the UK, a legal first was acheived by police when footage was submitted of a road idiot overtaking cars at high speed (thus on the wrong side of the road) on a blind bend. The idiot was filmed by one of the cars he had overtaken, the driver of which decided to submit the evidence of the dangerous act to the police authorities.
The car camera had produced video of such a high resolution and quality that the police were able to extract the registration number of the vehicle and trace the owner. When he was arrested, he did not have any defence - as the video showed his actions clearly and without any question of excuse or reason for his actions other than pure stupidity and endangering the lives of others.
In the landmark case the driver was fined, banned from driving AND given a prison sentence for his behaviour. Quite rightly and about time.
So in addition to insurance protection, we can now hopefully expect a flood of court cases which result in prison sentences for those who are too dangerous to be considered able to drive.
With so many accidents on our roads this is a major step forward in the fight against bad driving conducted by those who simply do not care for the safety of others - either pedestrian or driving.
On top of this and on a lighter note, we all remember the footage showing the Russian meteor - the car camera is recording events which would never have been able to be shared.

If you have a moment - why not visit youtube to see some of the videos uploaded by angry drivers who are fed up with bad driving and joining the fight towards safer use of the roads by fitting a car camera to their windscreen.
