Almost a third of Dyson employees working in the Department of Research, Design & Development (RDD). To ensure that research and innovation potential in the future can be increased Dyson committed to promoting young talent. In that respect the James Dyson Award in relevant.

In the late 1970s, James Dyson was angry about the vacuum cleaner models available at that time. He observed that clogged the suction devices, and increasingly lost. In a sawmill, he came into contact with a centrifugal separator, and this principle for the development of new vacuum cleaner took advantage. The air is set into a rotary movement and is accelerated to high speed. The dirt particles that move outwardly by centrifugal force, are collected in a separate container. This model does not need the Dyson-bag, and therefore can not jam.

On this basis, developed the Dyson Dual Cyclone technology. The vacuum cleaners have two cyclone chambers. The outer cyclone swirls coarse dirt from the air and the inner cyclone accelerates the air still further to remove fine dust particles are ejected from the air.
